A keratin sheath is what covers a new feather as it grows to protect as the old feather is drops off and the new feather grows in. After a while a bird will preen the new feather, and the casing will come off looking like dandruff. The new feather needs the sheath because of the new and fragile blood vessels going into the new feather.

Yup, thats what those little whitish plasticy looking things are. Some times you'll see them in the poop, and it can freak ya out for a minute, then you're like, whew! Just shafts.

Yep! It's the outer covering on the pin feathers (blood feathers) as they grow in. It flakes off into dust and larger flaky stuff. On some black feathered birds it can look almost black as well.

I'll try to get him crowing! He only does it indoors, for some reason, and the lighting in here is dim.

This is only the second molting season I've gone thru with my girls, last year seemed much milder than this year (seriously only thought 1 of the 4 girls actually molted last year).

Anyway, I was cleaning my coop, noticed all that white plasticy stuff and thought "Who's been sprinkling fake snow in my coop!" Didn't take me long to figure out what it was (thank you Google!) but there sure was a lot of fake snow in the coop ...lol
