That's exactly how my Favorelles lose their beards, too! I finally caught it happening. The fav... Derp or Coho.. stand still and get a dreamy, happy look while the other chicken slowly pulls the beard feathers out.

Have you ever noticed, that if one of your chickens gets a messy beak or face after eating, often someone comes over and delicately picks them clean?

I suspect it is this behavior, only the grooming chicken sees the beard as "extra debris on the face" and decides that it simply MUST go!!



Thanks for being patient with me in regards to Derp photos. I am waiting for this dreadful rain to end. We have minor flooding (though not right at my house). It is supposed to break up on Saturday.

Yeah chickens are good at staying clean... when they want to!

I have seen this! They are definitely happy to clean each other's faces off after a fresh corn on the cob frenzy. XD

It's totally a dreamy, happy look- they look sedated. haha

Even funnier- my beard remover is also bearded. I suppose there is no mirror in the coop...

That is how Florus lost his beard over the winter... After an oatmeal treat, they went to roost and when I went to let them out in the morning, and he was plucked BALD. No beard at all! LOL! Was shocking to see. I mean, those witches did it all in one night! LOL. Guess it was retribution for the bald patches on their heads while he was learning the arts of wooing. Don't worry... all bald head and beards are filled back in now. LOL
