Derperella, the (weird) Faverolles, & Friends

I'm really sorry for the lack of updates, everyone. After Trousers died and I found out we have Marek's in my flock now (and forever, really), it was a pretty hard double blow. I would have a few photos and stories to tell but I felt all the joy sucked out of it when I sat down to write. It really is remarkable how one special animal's passing can effect oneself. I also am always reminded of all the things I now can't ever responsibly do with my chickens, such as possibly breeding Faverolles in the future (thank you everyone that has suggested ways I might try to do it safely, but the truth is that I will never feel comfortable selling a bird off of my property, no matter how careful I am!). So while I have been enjoying my chickens very much, I have really felt pretty down when it came to writing about them.

Then Derp developed this wry neck problem and I felt even worse! We are having some medical shenanigans right now in our home and I just can't afford to get her to the vet unless it is life threatening or a quality of life issue (so far neither of these has been a problem).

I did get a video of Derp in the nest box earlier in the week and I will work on uploading it.
I can understand how it can be hard to enjoy writing about the chickens with some of the difficult experiences the flock has gone though recently. At least you are able to be in the moment and enjoy the chickens when you are hanging out in the coop.

It looks like Moa should be purring in that video - very relaxing to watch. That is a wonderful painting. I love how it is surreal and pastoral and Coho-full all at the same time.

Has anyone had problems with their faverolles being aggressive? I haven't had any problems with them. :)

I used to have a fav pullet. I HATED her. She was unfriendly, loud, and was a feather picker. She gave all my other birds bald spots, and no matter what we did she wouldn't stop. We gave her to a local farm. (we told them about her behaviors of course)

BYC Masterpiece Classics Presents:

Derperella and Juliet

Juliet:
O Derperella, Derperella! Wherefore art thou Derperella?
Deny thy Roo and refuse thy grill;
Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my Derp,
And I'll no longer be a Welsumer...

Derperella:
[Aside] *stares*

Juliet:
'Tis but thy absence that is my enemy;
Thou art thyself, though not a Chook
What's Derperella? it is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a Chook. O, be not some other Chook!
What's in a name? that which we call a Derp
By any other name would smell as sweet;
So Derperella would, were she not Derperella call'd,
Retain that dear perfection which she owes
Without that title. Derperella, doff thy chair
And for that chair which is no part of thee
Take all my treats

Derperella:
*stares*
I am only partway through the Derperella Chronicles but had to comment on this...ChirpyChick this is awesome! Thank you for giving me my first laugh of the day!

Actually, yes on the rooster being a jerk. Florus can be a bit of a jerk on occasion. People wise he is pretty much ok. I have a hen who is also a jerk on occasion. Which is a daily occassion. She is a little thing and she makes sure everyone knows she is not bottom of the flock. LOL. All breeds are going to have both types of birds. ALL.

Look at that sweet face... She is so pretty and adorable, and she can be a total terror. But we loves her. She's not a feather picker or anything, but just a real snot. Prissy brat... Think Mean Girls... The HEAD mean girl. LOL
