Derperella, the (weird) Faverolles, & Friends

Well that day, she got up on the top of the run and told the whole world what an aweful person I was for catching her and subjecting her to photo ops. LOL I really think she was the ring leader in the debearding Florus episode. You should see her daughter... Must be the best looking pullet. I will have to do my dangdest to catch her. Broody raised chicks are so not people social unless you come bearing treats, and then you BETTER NOT EVEN THINK OF TOUCHING US OR WE'LL SET THE ALARM OFF! Have you ever heard 40 odd chickens freaking out all at the same time just because you picked one up? LOL

got some photos of my little fav crossbeak- any suggestions on feeding? I am making crumble biscuits or pancakes, which seem to work better for her, i tried mush, she didn't seem to like it

the other babies are normal, course this one doesn't know she's special

There is a thread on BYC regarding Crossbeaks and their care etc. I've dropped in from time to time but, haven't subscribed, so not certain of the name something like CROSS BEAK SUPPORT

GROUP. I'm pretty sure they say piling up feed high in the dish makes it easier for them to grab something to eat.

i am subscribed to it, but it's pretty quiet- poor little one, both times i have bought eggs have had this happen- feel so sorry for them- i did dribble some food on his bottom beak to make sure he is getting some, but he seems to be growing-

Well, some good news this morning. The last few days Derperella has seemed more upright to me. I am not sure if I am imagining it because I want her to get better, or if it's true.

Derperella never knew how to use the ramp into or out of the coop. She preferred to fly at all times. This worked well until her neck went wry and then she was unable to stay "on target" when she flew... and crashed. Thus, she could no longer get into or out of the coop! When she needed in or out, she would scream and scream for me, and I'd come help her. Some hours later, she'd scream again, and out I'd go to help her. I made sure that both locations had food and water for her, but she insisted shat she lay her egg inside in the nest box. Of course! So out the food lady runs, hearing the summoning bellows of Derp, to help her.

I've been doing this since April, when her neck first went wry. Each time, I would "show" her how to walk up the ramp, or down it. Each time the lesson went in one cheekpoof and right out the other!

Well, finally last week she has discovered that she can, indeed, walk down the ramp.
Walking up the ramp is still beyond her, but going down!! She can DO That one now! Without help!

Every night I put her inside the coop before sunset, so that she can mill around. Once it's dark, I will go in and make sure she is settled into the bedding safely and lock the coop.
The last two nights, I've gone out to settle her.. and she's been happily ON the roost!

So, I am hopeful!

It can take quite a while to recover from wry neck, so even small improvement is worth noting. Its nice that Derp's mysterious fluff lined brain grasped how to go down the ramp. But of course Derp's Fud Lady still always has an ear out for any chicken screams from the coop.
