That's just brilliant news! The Baron is obviously receiving all the positive thoughts that all us Derpaddicts have been sending him over the last few weeks

Not yet... I forgot that Monday was a postal holiday, and so the blood was not shipped overnight until Tuesday. Then the vet office is closed Wednesday!! My vet is supposed to call me back today. She generally does her callbacks at the end of the day, after she's seen all her clients. I know she had an emergency beak repair on a parrot today (the receptionist posts lovely photos on Facebook) so it might not be until after 5pm.

In other news, Baron is still doing fine. Today he is sailing the towely seas!! He loves to arrange the towels and dust bathe in them, and then he sits on top of them proudly.
Sorry for the flash, it's very overcast here today.

He can stand on his own and can take a few shaky, stiff steps before he has to sit back down again. He does this a few times per hour!
yay to Baron ---HAPPY TOWEL SAILING, KEEP HEALTHY AND WE LOVE YOU.
P.S. If I ever get sick, I'm coming to live with Fud lady too!!! Just kidding, she's got enough to deal with

Im keeping my fingers crossed for him, wishing him a speedy recovery, I just got back from a holiday in greece rushed back to the runs (as you do) and looked in and was amazed to see they had changed so much and that they were all there, when I go away my neighbor looks after them as she used to have ducks, but most holidays my hens seem to miss me and one will just die :( like they miss me too much. so to find them all alive gave me mixed emotions of yay they are fine and :( they dont love me :)

I second, third and fourth this !!!!!! YEAH, keep on trying Puddles :love :love :love

Well, today it was sunny, not windy, and the warmest it's been in ages at 38°F!
This meant that the last.. oh... two+ months of chicken droppings that have been frozen in the bedding in the coop thawed, all at once! The bedding went from dry and clean looking (with mysterious hard, but not smelly, lumps) to pretty gross in less than a day.

So, despite not feeling so well myself, I tossed a respirator mask on, put on my old coat, and shooed all of the feathery booties out into the run and cleaned out the coop. I didn't do the major cleaning I usually do in the spring.. that will have to wait for a better day when the weather turns around for us, maybe in late April or early May. For now, I just changed all the bedding and PDZ in the poop board. It's still quite a chore.

When I was done, I was pretty warm from all the shoveling, scraping, cleaning and hauling. The girls were singing a pretty sad song about just how badly they wanted to run around in the yard. The conversation went like this:

Every Chicken: "WAAAAAH? BWAAAAAH WAAAAAAH?!?!!"
Fud Lady: "But the yard is still nothing but snow! You can't even get to the grass yet!"
Every Chicken: "WAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!"

So, I had the Fud Guy help me and we let them out.
There was a small spot where there was no snow, by the septic tank (it tends to.. hmm.. keep the ground a tiny bit warmer overhead), and the grass was there, and I felt pretty bad about leaving Puddles inside and alone, so we brought him out and plopped him in the soft grassy spot.

Well, wouldn't you know it, but he stood up and flapped, and did a little dance, and started crowing! Before I knew it, the girls were running over to him ("Ick, snow," they seemed to be saying. But running anyhow). Now, I should have known better, but I wasn't fast enough. Quicker than you could blink, Moa, the head hen, had flared up at him, and he returned the posture. This is a normal pecking order thing when introducing new chickens (and yes-- more than a month is long enough for them to consider him very "new!") but it wasn't something I was ready to have go down, until he was better. Imagine my surprise when he jumped up and met her to kick at each other, mid air!

Yikes! Well, I cut that short and told Moa that everything was fine, and shooed her rotund rump elsewhere. I calmed Puddles, who had a lot to say about the whole thing, and was trying to dance again! Good grief. I didn't want him to overdo it... after all, a week ago he couldn't even stand yet!! ... and sat with him in a chair while the girls tumbled around in the yard, trying to find goodies (hint: they found snow).

Still, Puddles is just fine, and we were pleasantly surprised by how mobile he made himself when he really wanted to be! He's back indoors and surfing his towels again, now, content and relaxed. I think this gives me a lot more hope!!

That whole situation is that comical mix of panic from the humans and excitement from the poultry. See that a lot with horses, too. ;) Baron is definitely feeling better if he has enough energy to try courting and jostling for face!

So happy to hear this story...what a day! It was pretty nice here today too, and my little crew was VERY HAPPY to get out and about. I wanted to sit out with them but could only stand the cold for a short time. It was nice in the sun, but the bit of wind we had made it too chilly to hang out for long! Glad to hear some encouraging words! Hoping for continued progress! :)
