Derperella, the (weird) Faverolles, & Friends

Well that makes more sense

There is a partial list of breeders in here for you to start your search. http://www.scnaonline.org/
AND you can always ask Jerry Schexnayder himself (the fellow that originally imported these darlings in 2001 and is the founder of SCNA) and he might know of a breeder closer to you.

There are alot of unscrupulous breeders out there that sell seramas that are in fact OEGB's! Artzyrobin and I can help steer you clear from them So sad

Shipping birds is not a problem as long as the breeder packs them with something to snack on (like cuke or tomato or watermelon grapes etc) AND the weather is not too cold or too hot AND the address to and from are ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY CORRECT! AND you tell the post office you are getting a package with live animals.

Yes, I am a horrible enabler!

I have been searching online (along with that helpful list, thank you) and haven't found anyone remotely close to me. It would probably be impractical of me to drive more than 2-3 hours one way to pick one up; any more than that and I'm looking at a possible hotel stay as my husband and I have a hard time doing one-day trips that are longer than 7 or 8 hours in the car. The closest major city to me is Buffalo, NY (about 1.5 hours north). My ZIP is 14760 if it helps. I want to be careful not to guy a "serama" and get a OEGB! Not that game bantams are bad, but I want a sweet pet that will be happy indoors with me. I understand that you are more likely to get that with a serama than a OEGB, given the breed histories on both.

The last time I shipped live birds was the only time to date- I shipped my first baby chicks. They spent extra days in transit and arrived in poor shape (I think this is partially what caused Derp's problems at first) and was told it is because of my more rural location, even though I had them shipped to the largest Post Office in the county. It has caused me to be a bit shy about shipping live birds!

Nambroth, I am going to a APA Chicken show this weekend and will be seeing many breeders, Let me ask around and see what I can find out. My middle name is ENABLER so that sort of explains it all ;)
p.s. I messaged you Jennifer

My other concern is Marek's... I know I am probably unlikely to find a breeder that also vaccinates against it. I have to ask myself if it is worth the risk or not. It's a hard thing to think about.

Thank you for the link, looks like I have some homework to do this weekend!

Also, to be clear, I am worried about Marek's because I have had a confirmed case in my flock 3 years ago. I must assume that my healthy birds might be carriers, and the Marek's positive bird (Mr. Trousers) lived in my house for the last two weeks of his life so even though I have cleaned very well, there is a chance it is in my home as well. The risk is lower than it would have been three years ago, but not gone.

I found this page, which is just along the lines of what I was hoping for. Posts specializing in pet Seramas, instead of strictly high quality or breeders!

This is perfect, as the videos I've seen from one semi-local breeder seems like her birds are skittish and scared of hands, and that they are kept as breeders. Which is perfectly okay, but not what I am personally seeking. I am thinking it might be worth it to ship when it warms up...

I've also read mixed things about vaccinating Serama chicks for Marek's. Apparently it's extremely hard to do because of their tiny size when they are freshly hatched (remember that the vaccine is most effective when administered before 36 hours out of the egg). I've also read that Seramas seem to be less prone to Marek's than other breeds. Perhaps it will be worth the risk?

So, what is best? A single loved pet, a pair? Should it be two hens, or a hen and rooster? I don't plan on breeding, but want them to be happy.

I have spent way time reading thru the ups and downs of Nambroth's flock. I love your stories of your lovable birds. Derp's antics have brought many smiles and laughter! I am sorry for your hardships and losses over the past few years. Your heart and mind are always in the right place for your birds. I admire your devotion and research.
