Derperella, the (weird) Faverolles, & Friends

My two faverolles don't pick their foot-feathers, nor have I seen the others do this. They just seem to break them off in daily life, scratching around, being chickens.

hope you all, and your chicken families, are staying cool. we just survived a high of 120 here in the PHX valley.

re: feathered feet. i dont have favs, but i do have a brahma roo who has the longest foot feathers ever, sometimes i wonder if i should trim them back. my friend up north has a brahma roo also who lost all his due to scaly leg mites. not saying yours has that, but maybe something to look out for or stock away in memory bank for future reference? can be treated with spraying legs with regular vegetable oil, or slathering with vaseline. mites cant breath through that stuff.

Well, what has been going on with Derperella and friends? I must keep this short as I'm preparing for a big show this week!

It has been raining, raining, raining nearly non-stop. Everything is a soggy mess. I have layered my chicken run with several tons of gravel but I'm still getting washouts and ponding. This is the wettest June on record for this area! It is not even long soaking rains, but very intense and heavy downpours that creates wash-outs, flash flooding, and is wrecking my poor veggie garden. I truly wish I could send this to my friends out west where there is drought!

Derperella continues to navigate the ramp... down. She still won't figure out how to go up the silly thing! Despite her neck being much more upright (in fact I'd say she's nearly straight again!) she is clumsy when she flies. Strangely, she will fly onto the roost with no problem, and that's even taller than the ramp. Gosh, Derp!! This is frustrating for me as I have to put her in a crate in the house when I leave for my show, because I can't have her staying out all night when I'm gone. The care takers only come once per day as it's a long drive for them and sadly no close neighbors I trust.

Today Lorp popped her pinless peepers off and managed to cut up the soft tissue around her nostrils a bit. I do not wish to be cruel to her so I need to wait until she heals to put them back on her. I will have to hope she is not overly mean to poor Willow while I'm gone. I really wish I could find her a new home! I cannot give her away though because I have Marek's here.

Otherwise things are going as they will go. I hope Derp learns the ramp soon, and that Lorp tones down the Evil, and that the weather gives us a break! Eeek!

Nambroth, first I want to send GOOD SELLING wishes to you on your show!

I am so happy to hear that dear Derp is improving alibet slow as it might seem, BUT with the Derp any rules get trashed, huh. :p Locked in a crate..... :hit poor sweetie... it is for the best....but still...... :(

Wish I lived closer as I would be HONORED to take care of your girls!

Poor Lorp, when I read about the peepers I got a chill thru my body..OUCHIE! Have a very stern talk with that girl before you leave, never know it might help..LOL

I will send chicken prayers your way that the girls live thru the "ordeal" of you being gone and Derp being in jail and that the rain comes out HERE on the west coast, we sure could use it! LOL

Have you thought about giving her to someone who already has Marek's in their flock? Kinda like people will find homes for cats with FIV giving full disclosure on the condition of the animal. I know of quite a few people who have multiple FIV cat households because they know how difficult it is to find homes for them.

In any case, good luck on your show!

Hi Nambroth,
We are all the way from Perth, Western Australia and I thought I would just say that your wonderful Derperella has given us lots of laughs throughout the last couple of years. We were here when you first started this thread although we only recently joined.
Thank you so much for sharing all of Derps adventures with us and we will be sticking around for all of the tales yet to be told. Derp is very lucky to have you as her Fud lady:)

Nambroth, can you tell me how you introduced Willow and Panic pants to the hens? I would really appreciate it. I have a hen who is as evil as Lorp when she sees my 16 wk. old pullets (or my foot).
Sending good wishes for Lorp's evil and Derp's clumsiness.

Even this might be irresponsible. There are many strains of Marek's virus. It'd be pretty terrible to accidentally make someone's Marek's situation worse. I also don't know anyone at all locally that has chickens AND Marek's!
