Derperella, the (weird) Faverolles, & Friends

So, when the Food Lady lets everyone out for their supervised daily ranging (there are a jillion hawks here and it'd break her heart to lose anyone-- especially Derp!), all 6 of the other chickens excitedly do Chicken Things.

Eat Grass.
Scratch for bugs.
Investigate leaf piles and scratch in them for bugs.
Find things that they shouldn't eat so that the food lady has to chase them and take it away.
Eat dandilions.
Eat more grass.
Jump onto places they don't belong.

Even the cockerel is doing his job now-- keeping an eye to the sky, protecting the laaaayyydies, and finding treats for them.

So, while the others all do their normal Chicken Things, what does Derperella do?
Normal Chicken Things?
Is she a normal chicken??

While they are enjoying the yard, and eating, Derp runs to the patio and visits her best friend.
The Grill.

"Oh Hai, Grill!"

She will spend nearly the entire free ranging time at the grill, talking to it and looking at it with great intensity. The grill is always there for her and is a wonderful, steady friend.

"Grill, yur featders seem to be out of place. I help you with 'dem."

The Food Lady often gently encourages Derp to try to do fun Chicken Things, if nothing else than for her health.
Derperella obliges, and eats some grass.

She caaaarefully stares at and considers the Food Lady's pineapple sage and thyme. They are not in easy reach (for scale, the other chicken's backs come nearly level with the top of this planter! Derp is quite small!).

Then... Oh!! A prize. Derp discovers the last standing sunflower. She admires it for a long moment.. then two.. then five minutes pass...

Finally, she tried a bite. Not sure what to do next, she stood there for another few minutes, with the piece of sunflower leaf in her beak.
This required thinking.

Since the sunflower didn't work out, Derperella did something else she excels at!! Derping across the yard.

She is missing a few of her muff feathers right now, but they will grow back soon. Who knows how they disappeared. It's Derp that we're talking about, here.

Lookin' in the house. When the Food Lady opened this door for her, to see what she'd do, she froze and stared inside for so long that the Food Lady was worried that Derp's brain might implode. So the door got shut again.

On the roost, next to her other friend, Chickadee. Life is good.

I could not stop laughing over the grill preening.

I love Derp. I love her so!
Can't wait to get my shirt this weekend! GUH!
I sketched a picture of her today at work and wrote "Huuuur" over the top of it.
I think about her a lot.
