Opa,
I built a couple of the roll out nest boxes with the original 1.5" high ramp board. After I built them, and before I installed them, I took a store bought egg and rolled it down. It worked great, but the egg cracked. (not unexpected though
) I didn't have any astroturf or shelf covering on the bottom, nor did I have a bumper of foam on the back.
But, now you're saying the ramp board should be 5" high and 18" long so they'll should roll even faster?
How come?
So, if I've got 11 hens laying in 2 dual nest boxes, some eggs are going to be doubled up on. With a 5x18 rise over run, that's a fast running egg. Won't the eggs crack when the hit each other (and miss the foam pad bumper?)
Anyway, you can see my nest boxes installed, along with my coop
here. Pictures of the 2 dual nest boxes at the end. (And please tell people not to use OSB. "Real" plywood worked much better on the second box!)
I am going to build another coop this summer, so I'm all ears!
