Ya'll don't even use the correct term!! It's not mutt! The new politically correct term is All-American!!!

This is what is used to describe dogs of mixed ancestory by Purina Mills at their dog events.

But I still wouldn't pay more than the cost of a spay/neuter for an All-American

OOOOOO!!! I just realized! I'm an All-American too!!!

I agree with this statement completely. Its one thing to breed two well tempered, healthy animals. Its a completely different thing to breed them because that male dog just so happened to enter your yard while your female was in heat. Then to go and sell these Uh-Oh pups for even $100 dollars is outrageous. In fact the only reason to pay high prices for any animal is if you desperately want something that looks a certian way. If you just want a good friend, any dog will do; price is irrelevant. Every living being is worth at least $1,000 but only a desperate fool would pay that price when you can get the exact same thing for free.

I have a Border Collie/Lab mix whom we got for free right after we moved here. I can honestly say that only 1 of her litter mates shared the same father and that her mother's owners did little to nothing to care for that dog. I absolutely love that dog to death but her health conditon could have been provented with proper breeding. Both Border Collies and Labs have problems with Hip Diseases. Within the first year of owning Dharma we could tell she was going to have some problems. It seems she has some mild arthritis in her hips. Most of the time she doesn't seem to feel any pain but when it gets cold she needs a message or two to help her walk more easily. I love all dogs, mutts or not, but people need to think of the diseases they are breeding into these animals.

ok.I have to chime in here..if you are seeing parvo pups from a pet store it is the stores fault,,not the breeders,if they are buying pups from a parvo kennel they need to stop until it is under control..more then likely they need to clean up the store as that is probably where the parvo is comeing from, either way they can end it at or before it comes to the store..and if you work in a vet clinic you should know that just because a puppy has had shots does not mean it is 100% protected..and even less protected if they have only had 1-2 shots..

Yes, pretty much any puppy under a year, vaccinated or not, has the potential to get parvo if exposed. It all depends on how many vaccines they have received and how strong their immune system is. My real beef is that the petstores providing these designer breeds buy their stock from puppy mills, who mostly treat their animals like livestock. It's true you can get a really nice pure breed from a puppy mill sometimes. I had a lovely Tervuren grump who was puppy mill bred. However, I adopted her from a shelter (puppy mill got none of my money). A lot of the designer dogs come from puppy mills, who mass produce dogs, often genetic nightmares, and treat them horribly. I don't think anyone on here would disagree that puppy mills are a bad thing.

I think if someone wants to get a x-bred then they should be allowed to get one,and we are still in the USA where we have a few rights left,,which includes getting them from whatever source they chose...I dont know why people get in a tissy about where other people get there pets..

I kinda agree with you...BUT where the problem comes in is when you have a pet shop pumping out pets to the first person willing to pay the $800+ for a mixed breed or even a pure bread dog and then that dog ends up in a shelter because it ate the $600 coach purse that was left on the floor with the beef jerkey in the pocket. lol (jk)

But seriously if there was a waiting period for buying a pet of any kind then I think it would help the problem of over crowding at local shelters

I know limiting people on buying pets will just push it underground but if there is not a market for these mass bread animals then I think overall the typical "back yard breeder" who does not care about standards of breed or temperament all they care about the the all mighty dollar, they may not be so popular.

I love mixed breeds and pure breeds BUT i have adopted ALL my animals from shelters or responsible breeders (except my chickens but they were from a very well know local hatchery)

ROFL.....All American, huh. well, I too am one of those.

Oh, and I wasn't complaining (or as it was put, "getting in a tizzy") about where people want to get their pet. I was saying I am very confused by the new trend toward mixing whatever dogs you have and calling it something special and selling it for what generally amounts to something close to the combined price of a puppy of each. Yeah, Labradooodles have been around for quite awhile now and are probably here to stay. Some are keepers but then some of these are going to be tried for a couple of litters, abandoned at a shelter when they aren't exactly attractive or whatever as adults, and that will be the end. But how many puppies get to suffer in the process. As I said, this one dog was caught mating with the chihuahua so she is now being sold. A dog that weighs around 30something pounds and a chihuahua.......and they aren't even going to stick around and see what the puppies are like. That is what I am talking about.

They should make irresponsible breeders pay a fine and it increases everytime their dog has a new litter, if they fix their dogs they get half the money back. I think all puppy mills should be shut down and the owners jailed I think anyone that irresponsible and heartless should be locked up period.

there are so many negative aspects to this type of "breeding".

There are so many negative aspects to pure bred out there too.

Here is Coco...my favorite mutt (not my dog...my friend's)

She is Pekingese and nonsense. Smartest thing I ever met. Much more personality and brains than her pure bred parents.
I even used her as a model for a stuffed animal I loom knit...

2 All American mutts. The darker one is my rescue from 10 years ago, and she's the best dog ever. The lighter one is my rescue from last year, who now lives with my brother. Both dumped on the road. Not designer by any means, but wonderful, loving dogs. Designer,All American, or purebred; dogs rock! (though not necessarily the people who breed them)

Do not attack me. I do not think that random things should be bred for outrageous profits but the thought did occur to me that if no one ever tried to create new breeds then there would not be so many pure breeds out there. How does a pure breed begin? Again I am no dog expert but this thread has gotten quite interesting.
