Designer Dogs

Quote:
They don't MAKE a good dog, but you can have a good dog that is papered... I had two yellow labs, both were AKC, only one was registered, but both were wonderful, smart dogs.

Ooh sure, i agree. I have a dog with papers (again joke)..and she IS the best dog. The papers say shes a pure Saint Bernard.....
lol.png
.. no way... shes def. a mix of some sort... I think Saint x Setter or something.... (i'll have to post a pice of her...)
Yet i have papers on her... so whoopie-doo about papers...
roll.png

Now my male Saint has no papers and is for SURE pure bred.... Maybe not high quality by AKC standards
roll.png
..but hes pure Saint....

About your dogs... i can BET ya that the dogs were great dogs because of the owner.... not the papers..

Just saying...

Good owners make good dogs. Designer dogs can be great dogs.......I just want them all to have homes and at the rate we are making them it ain't gonna happen.

By the way, the vet did not cross the two breeds! Sorry if that got misunderstood. She would be choking on her coffee to hear that! lol Pharoah/rott does not sound nice.

I did foster a rottie-poodle cross. We called him a Rotten Doodle. It helped get him adopted!

My apologies to any offended by my comments about breeders. And the caliber of people and level of love and respect for animals you find here on BYC is wonderful. I'm pretty sure none of you are the type of "breeder" I am worried about.

I NEVER said designer dogs weren't good dogs.... I said they were MUTTS and as I have NINE mutts, that's not an issue with me. The issue is people being naive and getting ripped off by paying tons of money for... mutts! Mine were all free

Oh, in the vet office we have a lot of names like that. I thought that would be what this thread would be about.

A chihuahua-doxie is a "chiaweiner"

Have you heard that one? There are a lot of cute names for designer dogs.

Oh yes the names are adorable and the dogs are too... it's the MONEY that's atrocious!!

Tell me more so I can

However, here is the load of BS that I was referring to:

http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/alusky.htm

These dogs are nothing more than what we call Alaskans or Alaskan Huskies... the Alaskan is a MUTT breed made for racing... HONED for racing. But they will never be a pure breed.

Heres a pic of me in Alaska... (UGH....look like crud...)
The pup i'm holding is the grandson of the big guy laying down behind me...
I asked what breed he was.. they said that he's "Alaskan".. (which i had never heard of before....)
They said its a mix of breeds that goes back many many generations....

They looked like Huskies or Malamutes to me

.... but the folks there said no, they are are "Alaskans"...

People find many reasons to validate breeding mixes and making more mutts. Doesn't make it any more right than what the puppy mills, pet shops and backyard breeders are doing. And I take HUGE issue with AKC registering these "purebred" poorly bred pet shop dogs. This is where your poor quality purebreds come from on their way to the shelter. And in this age of throw away dogs it hardly makes sense to sell dogs out of a shop when any teenager can buy one with no screening and a credit card. Those producing dogs for money, without having proper homes, testing, nutrition, care, records, or a standard of quality produced generation to generation, if you will, are adding to the pet overpopulation problem. There are many shelter dogs that will sit by a fence and announce when someone arrives without bringing more unwanted dogs into the world. Breeding two fantastic dogs once or twice does not give any consistancy at all. And the shelters are full of mixes that nobody wants. Doesn't make sense to make more. It is irresponsible. These people are not correctly creating a new breed or preserving an established one. What they are doing is benefitting from advertising something new and adding to the problem.

not trying to 'hijack' -- but wanted to say to Wolfwoman that my husband and I spent a few days in Alaska this past January (part of a 'bucket list' kinda thing)
and our favorite day, by far, was the one we spent with Vern Halter and his wonderful dogs -- we were out with the teams for six hours and have never been more impressed with dogs and their handler -- and never been more dazzled by the beauty of any place as we were on that never-to-be-forgotten day --

I am one of those 'tender-hearted old ladies' who suffer mightily when children and animals are even slightly mistreated so I was kind of dreading to see the 'real' lives of working Alaskan Huskies --

Their living conditions, the treatment, and most-of-all, the love they receive are simply wonderful --

We were greeted at the Dream-A-Dream Dog Farm by two 'golden oldies' who were nearly 15 years old -- they were lovely beyond words --

'crusading' for responsible treatment of animals has been a life-long goal for me --

I have greatly enjoyed this thread and the comments by everyone -- :-)

People are generally very susceptible to novelty and hype. And they'll spend their money however they want to.
