Detox Your House and Cosmetics! What do you do?

I'm here to join you... I'm not nearly as advanced--but am learning. I need to wax my raw milk cheese this weekend.

Instead of petroleum based wax on that lovely cheese (envious) you could use organic beeswax. Melts the same, just saying....even in canning jelly and jam we have been encouraged to use petroleum based wax to seal the jars....I hope I am not being too over the top here....

Just thinking about the rubbing alcohol, I think I use hydrogen peroxide or witch hazel as a substitute for that....as well as the liniments. Have a lovely witch hazel plant growing ( it is from the willow family famous for aspirin/pain relieving)...but you can get a really fabulous witch hazel at the health food store...

DMSO is in my medicine cabinet, I will post a link for the fabulous liniment recipe. It is precious and I hoard it.

Here is the link: https://learningherbs.com/remedies-recipes/jethro-kloss/

However I use the everclear not the rubbing alcohol. It works out the same and could be taken internally which I do not do, but I think it is better when applied to skin. Further note: these do not need to be powders, they can be more whole and crushed leaves and stems of plants.

I keep hydrogen peroxide too. Most people do not know to dilute it with 50% water. It can irritate the skin otherwise.

i do use beeswax and hope that in a year or two I'll be using my own. I need to give the bees time to make enough for both of us.

Awesome thread!!!

The hardest thing for us about removing plastics....toys. 99% of the toys my kids get as presents are plastic. We try to buy Waldorf toys and Amish made wooden toys, but for Christmas and birthdays our families get them plastic stuff, army guys, legos, etc. We appreciate the gifts but it makes it incredibly difficult.

We try to be as chemically free as possible- we use no chemical insecticides, fertilizers, etc. on our property or on our animals. I use vinegar based cleaners I make myself with essential oils.

I do need to find a good recipe for dishwashing detergent. Every organic or toxic free one that I have tried leaves smudgy streaks or residue on my dishes :barnie

I think wellnessmama is correct about hardness of water and temperature affecting usefulness of this recipe...not sure how to tweak it for that but I have learned to run the water til hot in the kitchen sink before starting dishwasher....hot water heater on other end of house lol!

@sannabelle
have you tried similar recipes? Just curious...

Washing soda, citric acid, and borax are now staples in my house and useful for many recipes....it is fun to make bath bombs too! Nice easy presents...

a lot of what I make turns into little presents whether healing balms, or little perfumes made from EO and grapeseed oil (my go-to carrier oil), people appreciate them so much!
