Where do you live? That might help to figure this out.... I think you may be right though....sure does look like it... my hubby says that the only thing that swallows things whole like that and regurgitates it up would be snakes....they are vulnerable while they are digesting their food, so when they are spooked they will regurgitate their meal so they can get away...... I am sorry for your loss....I love silkies! They are so soooo sweeeeeet!!!! We had some silkies but they all died... first one froze in the middle of the night ( I tried to do a heat resuscitation to no avail), then an owl got one, and then when we moved we gave our flock to a friend and he said a fox killed the last silkie. I was so sad.... they were silkie bantams.... so small and precious.

I live in Virginia. I'm wondering if it could have been a rat snake. I can't believe that a snake actually tries to swallow a chicken that size! I hope it wasn't huge!! I'm now fearful that whatever it was will be back looking for more. Dixie was the sweetest girl and didn't get much if any protection from the rooster, although I'm not sure he could have done much anyway. This is the hard part of owning chickens:(.

Yes, definitely snake. The bird was too big for it to swallow, so he had to leave it. Sad part is, the snake will not learn from his mistake. He will keep coming back until you find him and kill him.
