If the gray is the gander and buff is female then maybe all gray with only the male split to buff. Well, that doesn't tell you very much does it..Just not sure if buff is sex-linked or not.

I have both colors, and I think I prefer the gray myself. Perhaps it's because I have so much BUFF out in the goose pens- I have buff americans too.
