Deworming

How does one worm a chicken?? I'm new to all of this, and my husband just looked at me like I was crazy when I said apparently they can have worms. a huff was his response lol
Welcome to BYC!

The best way to deal with worms is to find a vet that will do routine fecals. Knowing what wormer to use requires knowing what worms they have.

LOL...You gotta collect some fresh poop and walk into a vet's office and explain yourself. LOL

For real though...
You do take some poop to a vet's office and ask them to test it for worms..it's very simple.
They do it to dogs and cats all day every day.
(same exact test)
This way..you know the exact worm you are treating...much easier then trying a million different things.

@bunchOfhens , there was another person that had a necropsy done on their deceased bird that had also been treated with ivermectin, and that bird had "moderate" amounts of large roundworm egg *and* cecal worm eggs.
I just dropped off a 12 week old pullet at the lab and they are doing the necropsy. The initial report said completely healthy so that didn't help. I trust you when you say to use something else and I will for the worms.

When you slaughtered your hen..where did you find worms, what did they look like?
(Rem..worms are not the same as mites)

Hopefully further testing will find the cause of death. Sorry for your loss. :hugs

Hens...being a newbie...how did you know to take a bird in for a necropsy?
When I was a newbie I knew nothing about a necropsy.
So I am curious.

That makes since. I do get the cats and dogs checked once a year. I will have to call the local vet and see what the say.

If they do the dogs they will be happy to do the chickens..poo is poo to them, it won't make any difference to them what animal it came from.
;)

Had to put her down myself she was having problems with her legs being somewhat paralyzed. I quarantine her for three weeks and nurses her on everything I could but she was getting worse. By then I thought it would be better to have her checked for diseases
