DH just got his "pink slip" to the unemployment line

I think it is really hard on men when they can't find a job. I think he is doing what he was meant to seeing as how he likes it so much, and helping the environment, etc. I myself was unemployed for almost a year - the longest in my life. I landed, with God's grave, in my current position - working in administration at the transit authority - the worse the economy the more customers we get!

The day my hubby called to let me know he was being laid off I cried. Then I cried some more. After my good cries I realized we needed to do what we could to save the house they we've spent the last couple of years building.

Our savings was shot from the last lay-off. I'm a sub for the school district so my income is hit and miss and seems nobody is hiring, not even fast food. Unemployment in the state of MO, you've gotta be kidding, it's a total joke.

I contacted the lunch program at school and go my kids in the free/reduced program. Since one of my kids eats trays daily, this saves a good amount.

We contacted the Division of family services and applied for food stamps and health insurance for the kids. While, we were declined for the food stamps, but they did get the ins for the kids. I have to jump thru some silly hoops, but at least they are covered.

For meals, I've found that serving the suggested serving size saves quite a bit. Added bonus, hubby and I are managing to lose a bit of weight and we noticed that we are feeling better.

We've turned down our furnaces to 64* and put on more clothing. Seems kinda drastic when I write it, but I refuse to lose this house and will do whatever I can to save it.

We are waiting for the mortgage company to call us back about possibley deferring a month or 2 on our mortgage. Worth giving your mortgage company a call if you have one.

Once our satellite contract is up, bye bye. We have to keep the cell phones, since we downgraded our home phone we need to use them. Internet has to stay, hubby is a computer guy and most job contacts use e-mail and online testing.

Good luck, these are trying times.

Man Oh Man, just one day at the time.
the Problem for me that I am selfemployed since2003 and own my own Excavating/ construction small business, and for that reason, I can't file any unemployment or nothing.
Construction looks real bad now and it does not look to be any better soon.
I am trying to find a part time job ( well keep on trying) .
I got one in dec 08 and was so happy, but I got laid off even before the orientation starts.
but any way I am still and will be always happy and satesfide no matter what, God knows what the best for all of us and sometimes it is good for human to see what hard then people will thank God more for what they have.

I pray for your Husband and for every unemployed man and woman to find a better job soon, and that the Future will be better for every single sole on earth.

Thank you all for your prayers. I too pray for all of you that are in the same boat. We have been through this several times before and we have always been OK. I have no doubt that this time will be any different. We live very simple lives, always have, always will.
Faith in God and his promises of a wonderful future give me the strength to continue on. Thanks again to all of you. Hang in there, things will get better.

For those of you who are self employed and can't file for unemployment that doesn't mean the other options are out!!

Go through your blue pages (or however they are listed in your area) see what there is and ask! The worst they can do is say no. Especially for the stuff for the kids: insurance is a biggie, so is food. There are food closets and other off the books options as well as govm't options.

Those are your tax dollars you already paid so take them back! If they can print money for the bankers they can spare a dime or two for your kids.
