Wow.. wish my hubby would build me a coop so nice. He wont even BUILD one for me.. I am on my own (I just learned)

This has been an informative thread.. I learned lots. Lots of things I was wondering about... like what HWC looked like and about locks on coop doors...

Nice coop Bionic Chicken

Thanks, Fisher. I wish you all the luck in the world building your coop. That would definitely be a daunting task for me. But there are so many great coop ideas on the coop page. One sweet lady even made a coop entirely from pallets! I see that you're in a colder climate though. Someone posted a picture of a small $199 Home Depot shed. Maybe you could look into that and then insulate it. I wonder what sort of insulating material is safe for our babies? Our coop really cost. All total, we probably will have spent $1000. He really didn't want to construct a run himself, although I know that can be done much more cheaply. Thank you for the compliments, all. You just realize toward the end of the project that you've got this really pretty setup that a raccoon can walk into and murder your chickens. I'm just really determined to make it predator proof. Fisher, let me know if I can help you in any way!

Just a word...coons are very smart and if you have a "chink in your armor" they will find it!! DH's mother had a coon when he was a child and it learned to use the "potty chair" before he did!! We will be sure to look at our coop design from their perspective and DH's knowledge of the little critters...the coop is beautiful!!

Coon are very smart, I lost all my chickens with in 2 nights when i finally figured out how they where getting into my coop.
Hoping this new run and coop are going to be better.

It looks like the same thing I am using on my coop. It was called smartside siding from Home Depot. It is supposed to be painted and comes with a warranty... but I think the warranty is void if you do not paint it soon enough.

If you are not insulating your coop... I would rsuggest painting the inside walls too, I am going to do that with mine. I am just buying $5.00 a gallon gloss or semi-gloss "oops paint" from home depot to make sure that the osb is sealed well, so it will last longer.

Be sure to use a good primer before you put the paint on. That way the paint will adhere properly etc. Anything by Zinsser is good.

I did faux finish on a house where the regular painters had used a cheap primer. Their paint wasn't sticking at all -- the good blue painters tape, rated for clean removal in 14 days, would lift it off in 2 seconds. They had to re-prime and re-paint.
