My month-old coturnix are getting bald spots on their backs, between their wings. About a third, or maybe half, seem to have this problem. Some are also losing feathers from the backs of their heads. What's going on?

UNLESS ON THE GROUND OR EXPOSED TO OTHER BIRDS I HAVE NOT EVER SEEN MITES IN COTURNIX, AND AGAIN I HAVE NEVER SEEN MITES CAUSE BALKDNESS ON THE BACKS OF HEADS... THEY MAY ONLY BE 1 MOS OLD BUT I STUILL SAY IT SOUNDS LIKE 1 OR 3 OF THE LIL FELLAS WOKE UP AND REALIZED WHAT THEIR "SPECIAL PURPOSE" WAS THE TIMING IS PERHAPS A TAD EARLY... BUT WE ALL KNOW A COTURNIX ROO IS LIKE A TEENAGE BOY OVERDOSED ON VIAGRA

WHEN IN DOUBT "SHAKE AND BAKE" ALL OF THEM WITH SEVIN DUST AND SEPERATE THE SEXES--- THERE BOTH PROBLEMS SOLVED AT 1 TIME

More than likely it came from mating, since there are already signs of it, I'd say the bald backs are part of it...

A month old is 3 weeks....breeding age is 6 weeks...

I had a guy try to sell me some corts last year. He said "I have way to many hens". I thought umm ok. They were all bare backed like that. He said he knew they were hens because of the roosters pulling feathers when they bred. However half the birds in his "hen" cage were crowing! I told him his problem was way too many roosters not hens but he just looked at me like I was crazy.

But 4 weeks is still kind of early for them to be breeding that much. True, I've had hens lay eggs at barely 5 weeks old but that is definitely not the norm. I am still leaning towards mites on this one more so than over-breeding.

Oh Sorry Forgot 1 Thing.... Laying Age Starts Around 5-6 Wks Depending On The Birds Them Selves... Breeding Starts As Soon As Jr Figures Out What His "special Purpose" Is For

Which Is Often Times Sooner Than The Appearance Of Eggs As With Almost All Speces On The Planet Males Sexually Mature A Tad Sooner Than Females

I was just par-oozing this old post and thought I might have your answer. I purchased my quail from a breeder this summer. All of his quail looked identical to your pictures. They were 4 weeks old at the time and VERY VERY VERY overcrowded. Once I brought mine home and put them in a bigger pen their feathers filled right in. Maybe pecking from over crowding? Mine didn't have any mites and they weren't even thinking about mounting yet.
