I came home from vacation and found my purple Orpington rooster motionless. He’s abt 5 yrs old. I brought him inside and put him in a crate. I noticed he had very smelly poop. He wouldn’t eat or drink. I started giving him pedialite by syringe. He peeked up just a little. When I noticed he wasn’t eating I started mushing up some canned dog food and fed some to him. Then I noticed he had lice so I dusted him. I game him some yogurt to help his digestive system. Today he seems worse. What can I do for him? His color seems to be ok.

Was someone feeding and watering him while you were gone, and was everything done the same, such as getting outside to roam as it normally is? Could he have run out of water, or possibly was kept from water and feed? Electrolytes and vitamins can help, as you are doing. Poultry Cell and NutriDrench are good products, and he an have 2-3 ml daily of that. I would mix some chicken feed with a lot of water to make it mushy, and see if he will eat that. Scrambled egg or tuna are usually favorite treats for my birds to coax them to eat. Check his crop to make sure that it is emptying overnight. Is he molting by chance? Many birds get sick during that time of year. Is he able to stand or use his legs?

Someone was feeding and watering them. Yes, he is coming out of molt. He can only stand for a few seconds. When he does stand he is very wobbly. I am having to open his mouth and put food down his throat. He is not eating or drinking on his own.

You might want to learn tube feeding. It is safer that trying to force feed, since there is danger of choking. But you can offer wet feed often, and he might start taking some on his own once he gets some liquids in him. It could be that while you were gone, he didn’t eat and drink like normal, since his routine might have been different or he was not comfortable.
