Hi, I could use some advice. I got my first two hens about a week and half ago. They are ISA Browns. One sounded a little rattly a few times, but I didn’t originally think much of it. They both stayed in the hen house a lot initially. However one hen has become noticeably more lethargic than the other. She stays in the coop more and is sneezing. It seems clear for the most part. Her comb is also paler than the other hens. (Unsure if that is more to do with molt or whatever she has) I added Recover 911 to the water since that’s all I have on hand. (It’s been about a day of that.) She now has a poopy butt and diarrhea. I haven’t noticed any blood in it. She is also occasionally holding up one foot. She is eating and drinking fine. The other hen seems entirely unaffected. Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Hi, and welcome to BYC! :frow Pretty hens!!

Sounds like she's got an URI (upper respiratory infection.) Sometimes they get over them themselves. Depending on the temp is where you are, I'd bring her in, keep her warm and boost them both up with vitamins. We use Poultry Cell most of the time.

She may improve, but if she doesn't within a couple of days, she will need antibiotics in that case.

I figured I would give a quick update. Both hens are now sneezing. I’ve been giving them vitamins and using VetRx. They both act normal except for the sneezing. I treated them for a week with Tiagard under the advice of someone else with zero changes. Our weather has been going between hot and cold. For now they remain separated from the others.

It's been a couple of weeks since your last post - she's been sneezing this whole time? Have you noticed any goo in the eyes or nares? VetRx is not an antibiotic, it is more like a Vick's product. With wacky weather, depending on where you are could it be dust, pollen or particulate matter? Is the coop dusty? Do you have adequate ventilation?
Welcome to BYC by the way.

Yes the sneezing hasn’t stopped. They have clear discharge from the nostrils. It doesn’t really smell. The coop is ventilated. I’m using pine flakes and scoop about every other day. I’m in GA where the temps are bouncing around 40s-70s. Pollen has been high and low.

Is the poop still icky for the one?

What are you feeding them? Most here feed an all flock feed with 18-20% protein. You should also be providing Oyster Shell and grit in a separate container available all the time apart from their feed - they take what they need as they need it.

Have you treated for respiratory illness? As Debbie292d mentioned above, you may need to do that. Do you have access to antibiotics? Tylosin seems to be what's recommended here for respiratory. You can check here: https://jedds.com
Powder is administered in the water, so everyone gets treated.

They are pretty girls.

They get chick starter/grower with oyster shells and grit provided.
The Recover 911 seems to have cleared up the diarrhea and lethargy of the one. I did a week of mixing that into the water along with rubbing Vetrx on them.
When the sneezing continued I tried a week of tiagard mixed into the water everyday. This had no improvement on them. I started giving them the vitamins and using vetrx again since the temps have dipped again this week. I’ll look into getting the tylosin and see if that helps.
Thank you, they are sweet girls. Hopefully they can shake the sneezing. Thank you for all of your help!
