Fenbendazole (Safeguard ) dosing for chickens is:
For Roundworms Only - give 0.23ml per pound of weight once, then repeat in 10 days.
For other worms, including roundworms - give 0.23ml per pound of weight once a day for 5 days in a row.
The hardness and you being able to feel something like a mass in there, I would suspect reproductive issues. Always hard to know exactly which one unless you lose them and perform a necropsy. Even then it might be hard to give a definitive name - Egg Yolk Peritonitis, Salpingitis, Internal Laying, etc. since all of the have the potential to have caseous exudes (and/or fluid) in the abdomen.
Reproductive issues are pretty common in laying hens, but that doesn't mean it's not heartbreaking. I try to offer as much supportive care as I can, then if they continue to fail, I put them down.
I'm going with "For other worms, including roundworms - give 0.23ml per pound of weight once a day for 5 days in a row."
Happy is 4.4 lbs,
4.4 X .23 = 1.012 so is that 1 ml?
Do I give Fenbendazole Safeguard straight or does it have to be in her water?
Yes, it's in ml. Dosage is 0.23ml per pound of weight so if she weighs 4.4lbs dose would be 1.012ml . If you have 1ml syringes, then fill to the 1ml line and that would be good..23ml = to 230mg
Ya, I was over thinkingYes, it's in ml. Dosage is 0.23ml per pound of weight so if she weighs 4.4lbs dose would be 1.012ml . If you have 1ml syringes, then fill to the 1ml line and that would be good.
Not sure where you are coming from with .23ml=to 230mg you are over complicating things I believe.
De-worming her may help if she has worms too but as previously mentioned, if she has an underlying reproductive issue she still may not improve drastically.
I'm sorry she's not doing well. The photo was this first poo of the day. Happy pooped again this afternoon but it was very little.
She did not eat today, just drank and slept a lot.
The one vet in our town for farm animals has still not called back. The cat dog vets will not see a chicken. I have some more calling around to do.I'm sorry she's not doing well.
If you can see a vet that can give you an antibiotic that may help with any infection.
