Diary for my second shipped egg hatch due 8th oct 2015

DAY 8

Couldn't take it anymore so candled my 3 incubator eggs.

One looks to be a blood ring forming
One couldn't see anything
One .....has a chick in there! :)

I haven't thrown the other two yet, will give it another 4 days till there will be no doubt and then dispose of if no change to them. Will candle Penny's five eggs at the same time on day 12, no point disturbing her till the eggs will be far enough along I can be 100% sure which to keep and which to throw.

DAY-11

e-ewwww had my first rotten egg. Opened the incubator to add water and the smell hit me. Picked up the one I thought was getting a blood ring the other day and took a whiff then took it straight out to the bin. I now get why they say you will know if you have a rotten one!

Thought since I'm at it and it's garbage night :) might as well double check and decide about the other two in the incubator. The one I thought was clear is most definatly clear so also went in the bin. The third is still looking good with the black blob looking more obvious than last time and looking like the pictures for day 11.

DAY 12

Well we are at 2/12 eggs at day 12.

Just candled penny's and she had only one developing egg. One other looked like it started then stopped a few days back, the others were clear.

So I now have one in the incubator and one under penny. The one under penny seems to have it's air bubble more to the side of the egg than in the end, not sure if that is going to cause a problem at hatching. The one in the incubator the air sack is at the big end as I've had it sitting in the incubator that way up all the time

I'm hoping I have done the right thing but brought the other egg into the incubator as well.

I'm hoping that these last few days big end up in the incubator might help move the air cell back where it should be in the big end so there less chance of loosing it at hatching.

Last year there were 5 I think it was fully formed under penny but only one managed to get out.

Hope both of them hatch! If you only hatch 1 would you get other chicks & try to get the broody to adopt them? I got impatient & candled some of my eggs last night at day 4. Looks like 2/6 are developing in the incubator. For some reason it was harder to candle the ones under the hens but I think 2 are developing there too.

It's hard to be patient (I'm just as impatient so I know lol) but they really shouldn't be touched that first week, it's the most critical time in their development especially if they were posted. Hopefully when you candle day 9 you see a few more dark blobs! Day 4 is very early to try and see so fingers crossed for you!

I only had one hatch last year from the same breeder and it was fine on it's own because it was with it's mum. It would be different if it wasn't being raised by a hen though.

Sorry to hear that only one of penny's was developing

Fingers crossed for two babies in a week! One black and one blue

Are there any breeders locally that you could go with next time? Sounds like shipping them is really not working for you

I candled my lot, 2 were infertile so I took them out. Then the next day some of my other hens broke in with my broody and cracked one of the eggs... Thank goodness it didn't make a mess in the nest so my other eggs are okay... so that leaves me with 5.

Knowing my luck it will be one black and one blue then they will both turn out to be roosters lol

I did find some local but the rooster had feathered legs so thinking not exactly an australorp lol

Fingers crossed for your 5!

DAY 17

Arghhhhhh. Incubator has gone stupid again. Alarm just went off, it's running a full degree lower than it was for absolutely no reason I can see.

So day 1 my calibration to get it to heat correct to my own hygrometers readings was -4. Then it worked all the way up to +4 and now suddenly we are back the other way again but all the way to -10. No wonder it's owner never had anything hatch with it just using it's thermometer.

Going to be a late night sitting up and checking it doesn't decide to change back again.
