I swear you guys wait until I log off LOL

MommaBee: update? It didn't sound so good from the posts I saw (I skimmed through them quick this morning).

Good Morning Everyone! Good Lunchtime Sumi!

Sally, I am glad your two lil frozen babies are doing good! I worried about them and my own until at least midnight last night. No rest for the weary eh? They do make me feel better about working on my lil guy. Not so worried about it getting too cold under my heat lamp while working on it.

Sumi, we missed you so much last night. Not sure how much you read, but most everything went downhill around page 999- on to what felt like forever.

Here is stubborn chick this morning. Still chirping and would you believe I see less yolk? Either it is drying up or still absorbing...

Sorry that paper towel is right in the way of the yolk but if you look in between the leg and the towel you can still see some.

So I guess just let it rest some more today? How long does it usually take to absorb yolk?

update,

frozen chick A -
Head is up higher running around, not too friendly for some reason

really scared even of the other chick.

frozen chick B-
spraddle leg is better, perky but not walking right, tried to fix curl toe but makes him walk worse so I will worry about that after the walking issues.

I still cant believe they are alive to be honest, and in half decent shape to boot. I now wont worry about getting them too cold while I assist that's for sure! I know they can experience fairly cold temps! Mind you it was aprox 45 degrees in the shed yesterday morning.
I'm so glad they're o.k. and you got to them in time! Don't blame Betty though. In nature it's survival of the fittest and her priorities would be with the hatched chicks, not the eggs.

I am also concerned about it's other foot. Not just that we can't locate it, but if it is in there, how much damage is being done with it being stuck and the rest of it being out?

As for his tiny wing, my DH pointed out that the other chick that hatched with this batch (which looks a lot like this one) also has small wings. So maybe it is just something I am not used to seeing.

And I have not gotten him out of the bator yet. ( I need an entire pot of coffee first) but I think it's head is starting to shape up a bit better.

Guys if this chick would have finished hatching on its own, IF being the key word, I think it would have been later on in the week. Mind you it is day 24 of the hatch and it had internally pipped what 5 days ago?? So without the breathing hole it surely would have died in the shell by now. I guess I am trying to rationalize why I helped it? It was the right choice right?

I had to get an early-ish night so I can get DS up for school. It was chaos this morning trying to get everything together and remembering I didn't buy something for his lunchbox! So we had to cram in a quick stop at the corner shop on the way LOL

I read through most of the posts from last night, trying to follow the story. That little guy doesn't want to give up! He does look odd though. Only one leg or is the other tucked behind him? If he's still hanging in there and absorbing the yolk I think he'll be o.k. I really, really hope so! They take on average 12-24 hours to absorb the yolk, but this hatch was such a confusion. We can't do much but wait. If he gets weaker/tired you can perk him up a little by dipping his beak in sugar water. Or dribble some on his beak and let him drink it.

I really hope he'll be o.k. You need something good to come out of this.

We posted at the same time. Chick wings are really tiny. If you look round the site at pics of newly hatched chicks you'll see they are all head and feet and this fat little body.
Your choice was between helping or letting it die. I feel you did the right thing trying. So far so good!

Quote: as I told you last night, that is not right down there that bright yellow does not look like a normal yolk sack, it should be yellow orangish, anyone have a pic so I can show her????
He should have absorbed that yolk long before now. Again I state my worry as to infection with this guy. I would change that paper towel and again you have it in front of you so its your call as to what to do. I told you that I would have taken it out of the shell and seen if I needed to tie off the cord, at some point soon your going to have to make a decision to investigate or not. I am a firm believer if the yolk broke it needs tied off so he isn't stewing in infection and having an open navel is like a funnel to his gut. Not only am I worried about infection I am worried that he has been stuck in that shell for so long and will have other orthopedic issues too. I wish I was closer I would help you. But you need to do what is comfortable for you. If you want to wait then wait.

I got the weaker one to drink/eat now to get that other one to

My problem child from my last assist only just started eating. I was so worried about it! It's eyes are still gunky, so I have to clean it all the time. Else she can't find the food. So it looks like another day in the brooder. I really just want to give them all to mom now. I need a break

And there are at least 2 more viable looking eggs in the incubator...

So here is what I am dealing with. I changed it’s paper towel out right after I took that first pic. I started chipping away more. I KNOW it absorbed some yolk last night because I had chipped the shell away down to the yolk like and this morning it was much lower. I chipped down to that point and slowly moved the shell around. I saw another foot!!! (small victories) and I could not find what suppose to be the navel but I took a pic. I know that makes me sound like an idot, but there is a lot going on down there.

Here it is before I started working on it...

This was during...

That string to the right was what I was going to use to tie it off. I for some reason could not find floss but I found thread and coated it Ointment.

Currently it is back in the bator, still chirping but it is comfy in it's cup.

Look and that last pic, I know the red heat lamp throws things off but everyone is still asleep and I couldn't get DH to help me take a good pic. Is it looking like it might still absorb it, or does it look infected?
