x2 LOLGASP !! Sally done with eggs...no way lol lub ya
Welcome to BYC and the threadHello Everyone, Just into day 8 and 6 on two eggs that our black cochin, Cindy (surrogate mom) is sitting on. Candled them
they look good. We're new to the hatching thing so we choose a broody girl to do the work for us. She is quite gentle
but will let you know when she's had enough snooping. The eggs belong to our Sussex Bantams we have the Roo and Hen
in a separate cage from the main flock. Tried to introduce them to the flock in Jan with disasterous outcome. Lost one of
my cochins. So sad. Thought I'd let her hatch them and then move to them under lamp so the rest of the flock won't
bother them. Any suggestions?
The room temperature has an effect on my incubator. I noticed when I have the heater off in the room it runs 0.5*C colder than when I have the heater on. I don't want to fiddle with the incubator's temp, so I try and keep the room warm enough.I think the weather is what caused my spikes partially too...up one minute down the next ..I second that grrrr
Quote: Sorry guys, I'm trying to catch here. What's going on? Do you have another broody sitting, Sally? If the rooster's bothering her try and separate her, even if you need to put a cage over her where she's sitting and let her out once a day to eat and drink and poop. I did that with a couple one of mine. They'll learn the get-up routine.
Quote: O.K. found your post. I've been doing broody hen hatches for years and maybe I've just been lucky, but we had few problems. I've lost some chicks to the hens' stupidity and just plain bad luck, but it's gone well enough for me to prefer doing it the natural way instead of raising them myself. Sometimes you will get a broody that's just not cut out to be a mom and you'll end up having to raise the chicks, but give your hens a chance before making that decision. I've had some bad mothers, but I also had quite a few fantastic moms who took great care of their chicks and gave us no problems at all. I can't give you the odds (that's Oz's area of expertise), but I'd say 90-95% of our broody experiences was good.
Its candling day for me - day 7 - i will have to wait for dark. I have greenfire line basque and swedish flower hen eggs that I have a buyer for every one that hatches so here's hoping for a record hatch on shipped eggs.
Quote: Could be better, but yeah, not too bad. Are you going to give the orps a bit longer?
