Day 21 and chewing my fingers for signs of life from the incubator.... First time ever trying to hatch... I have heard patience is a virtue and I'm not feeling very patient LOL
Fingers crossed! Day 21 is the worst day for me too. I always fret. Last time I convinced myself that the chicks were going to hatch the next day only (day 22) because I set the eggs in the evening. It worked, the chicks hatched on day 21 and surprised me

That's why I was so quiet lately. I was moody! LOL And I couldn't really say anything before we knew what we're doing. It was a difficult week, but hey, it's Sunday!

On a lighter note: Oz, I thought of you for some reason when I saw this today:

but but but I only set 280 something.

next time i am going for 300

tough decisions Sumi but you have to do what you have to do. When I had to return to the usa and leave living in the philippines with my family - it was heart breaking

dont give up the fight. the chickens need you

Day 22 and Day 21. I've only had 5 hatch out of 40 something eggs that I put in lockdown. I have pips and have movement in some of the other eggs. I am going to wait and see what happens. I moved the 5 out. I've combined both bators into one. Ive only had one shipped egg hatch so far. The other 4 were mine and the pipped ones are mine. One shipper has 3 eggs out of 20 left that are viable and another shipper has 1 out of 14 that is viable and the last shipper has 10 out of 27 that are viable but all those are on day 22. I know my temps were on for the last two weeks but could of been off for the first two. I am going to exhibit patience.

I already set 41 Buff Oprington Eggs in one of the empty bators.

I have 28 more shipped eggs waiting until this afternoon to go into a bator that is ready and has been holding temps for two days now. I am putting turkey eggs that have been in another bator for 6 days with them and finishing it out with some more Buff Orpington eggs.

My homemade Soda Pop machine bator burnt up the motor I had. I went and got two 300 watt bulbs. It has two fluorescent bulbs in the door and a big fan in the top circulating everything. it has been holding temps for 12 hours. I have the bulbs hooked to a thermostat. I am now experimenting with a bow of water to see if I can raise humidity. Im not going to set any eggs in it until I have it set and working properly for several days.

And I killed a hugeGobbler today.

Did I miss anything?

I knew you'd make me laugh.

Yeah, it was a very difficult time. We discussed our options over the past few weeks and decided this will be better than relying on sketchy info and wondering. DH's back kinda pushed us also. I'm not happy about having to pull DS out of the school where he's so happy and doing so well, but he's young. And I'm not happy about having to go back after settling here, but we'll have our forever home when the time's right.

600w is a lot of heat but as long as the bulbs do the job, you should be fine. my bator in the philippines is 11 cubic feet and i use an 80 and a 60 but ambient temps are 78-86 and its well insulated. my next experiment will be with a 200w personal space heater.
