I just sold most of my chickens and the coop. Mom and babies are going tomorrow and only the 3 youngsters are staying behind. Our landlord's taking them.

This bit was not easy

When I saw the coop on the trailer I couldn't help thinking of that day we bought our first hens and had to put them in the bathroom, because the coop was due to be delivered the next day only, but I couldn't wait another week for my chickens. And then the courier phoned to say he's on his way with the coop. It was crazy, but so exiting... looking at the chickens at market and choosing hens to buy and then bringing them home. Getting the coop delivered that afternoon and scrubbing chicken poop off the bathroom floor. DH thought I should've waited, but I just wanted chickens again. It was so nice to have chickens again.

Quote: Okay! I get up in the morning, and put on a coat. Twenty minutes later I go out with vegetables, and sweat in a pair of shorts.
I turned off the heat lamp (finally!!) for the 7 -week-olds last night, and candled the eggs. I checked a BCM, and could only kinda trace the air cell. I candled an EE, and was able to see the veining. The temp is still going between 100-102.
Aren't Marans hard to hatch? I thought you guys (in PA Unite) were talking about it a while back.
I am skipping the stuff from the last few days I didn't read. Anything I should know?

I haven't been on here in a few days, and just wanted to update all of you that were giving me advice on my first time hatchings eggs. Just to catch everyone up I'm hatching duck, turkey, chicken, and guinea eggs together using the dry hatch method. I am on day six right now with the duck, turkey, and guinea eggs and will be adding the chicken eggs tomorrow. So far everything seems to be going great, all eggs that I've candled so far seem to be showing progress, except for the guinea eggs which are to thick shelled to see much yet. The duck eggs are doing awesome, I can see really good veining in all eggs so far. The turkey eggs are too speckled and dark to see any veins but the air cells are right on track. My broody hen is also still sitting on the eggs I gave her. Hopefully everything keeps going good. I'm trying to not get my hopes up considering I still have three weeks to go. I originally only expected a couple eggs out of each breed to hatch at best, since this is my first time incubating eggs and I'm using shipped eggs, but now after all the progress the eggs are showing I'm beginning to hope for an even higher hatch rate. Thank you to everyone who gave me advice on getting started!

Wish I could give you a good hug in person. You sound like you could really use one. Hopefully it won't take long to get MIL and the farm squared away.
