ABOUT the Duck air holes..... I DO NOT suggest you make this hole in the TOP of your eggs, esp if shipped.

my reasons are that most times the air cell dips and a lot of body parts could still be north in the shell, so to avoid them go more south at the dip side. see my pic.

BUT I did it AFTER I SAW internal pips except malposition one.

awwwwww cute too!
I did i just grabbed then hen i got the chick and put it in the incubator i got the other 3 eggs and put them in and i separated the chick with a piece of cardboard from the other 3 eggs as i heard it can damage the other baby chicks while they are hatching i was told that the chicks jump over the egg if this is not true please tell me and i will take the cardboard away. The chick is ok and i heard a cheep from one of the eggs all going fine hope ill find 4 baby chicks in the morning
you have them in the bator then? keep humidity up and keep us updated, did you candle the others or look for internal external pips?

The only question now is when should i feed and water the baby chick

I put a little lid in there with marbles or rocks and offer water and sprinkle feed. you can do it now if you want! give him something to do while he is waiting!

My eggs are in the Bator after the obligatory wait time. I think I'm developing an obsession with the Serama even though some of you...and I really can't remember who cause I've got mush for brains...discussed they probably weren't fertile. Did I imagine that?

Anyway, of course I won't be upset Sally, merely disappointed but it wouldn't be your fault! I will simply search diligently to find fertile because I NEED one. I don't know why really.

Now I have another 20 days of stress to go through. How do you all do it so regularly? I'm mildly intelligent however I can't seem to convince myself that staring into that tiny Bator window all day on day 1 is NOT going to change the outcome at all...

So... anyway, by Barred rocks are feathering nicely, my Goldie girl is just a beautiful bird and I'm trying to rearrange my coop in my head to facilitate a better breeding system. I'm not in chickens for the chicks really, I simply enjoy watching them and need the eggs they produce. BUT as I threw in an egg from my Silver Sebright I did briefly wonder about who the daddy was and what would hatch. I have two Roosa beautiful golden laced polish guy... I'm sure he has a technical name. But I don't know it, and a very sweet black austrolorp. Neither would I WANT to mix with my sebright, but alas the deed was done because they are fertile, so I guess we shall see what type of Frankenstein comes out. I have however had some interest in my austrlorps....sooooo..... how would I do that?

Oh good gravy, this site has served to give me a new addiction. I'm off to research.

And please... I know my questions are unsmart. But I really am just starting. And yes I know unsmart isn't a word, I picked it up from my kids because they aren't allowed to call each other Dumb, so this is the substitute.

the only unsmart question is one not asked. there are plenty of dumb questions but we arent allowed to talk about them lol

research is good - removed the "un"

Quote: LOL! I don't know what color they are. I kept thinking they looked black, but didn't think it was possible if your Betty wasn't laying. Is black in the Splash gene? They are dark, but do have a bluish cast to them. Are the blues much lighter than these? I would be excited if they were black, that's my favorite color chicken, glossy black feathers and bright red comb. The Brahmas didn't make it. I opened them and the one make no sense, it's beak was pressed right on the air cell membrane, it could have pipped with no effort at all. The other must have been malpositioned, all I saw when I looked in the air cell was a lot of yolk. At least I got one, now I hope it's a girl..
