I am hatching chicks now but I need help
Earlier there was a peep in the chick and i took it out to check on it i put itback in and left it and i few minute later the hen went crazy and rippedit open it got the chick out and ate the shell i thought it was a good mother the chick was cheeping and everything was fine so i came back about half an hour later and she had ripped the chick apart and ate half off it i was so worried i looked up online and it said that the hen sometimes kills all the chicks because its not their own so i went out 5 minutes ago and tried to get the hen out to get the eggs and put them in an incubator and i started to move the hen about and i saw a baby chick underneath fine but then the hen went crazy and peeked an egg open but there was nothing in it so i am very worried if wat will happen in the morning if all my chicks will die and i will have none

By the way i also read up that they kill the chicks if there is something wrong with it i just dont know what to do
Please help:(

Sally, Oz, and everybody participating in this thread, I wanted to say THANK YOU for guiding my first shipped egg hatching experience. I purchased my eggs from a BYCer who did an excellent job packing, and all of the eggs were intact (and fertile) but had taken quite a beating en route--I had 4 detached air cells and 4 saddles (none of the ones with detached cells made it all the way to hatch). I didn't post any questions along the way because you have covered the process quite thoroughly!

Sooo...Greetings from my 5-day old Silkies, Jack Fuzzy and Peach! Without the tremendous wealth of information to which I had access these past weeks, these little ones would not have made it.

oh wow!! HOW ADORABLE TOO!! CONGRATS!!! I wish you would have posted! They are cuter than my blue chicks! yours are light and do they have vaulted skulls or just one? how cute!!! YAY!!! sorry about the rest, like I said silkies must have really thin inner membranes and loosen very quickly. but you have a nice pair at least! YAY!

Daddy goose is very protective of the little ones. He ain't playing.

Those are some cute geese, but scary too!

BROODY Splash Cochin Update!

grrrrr all eggs ROTTEN! nothing in them but stink bombs!!!
I got one chick from the bator! and it better be a girl!

NEVER WILL I LET A BROODY hatch my eggs again! 2 bad runs and I had enough!
I had people wanting those chicks too! sooooo upset! Will I ever get choc eggs in my pen!!!!

ABOUT the Duck air holes..... I DO NOT suggest you make this hole in the TOP of your eggs, esp if shipped.

my reasons are that most times the air cell dips and a lot of body parts could still be north in the shell, so to avoid them go more south at the dip side. see my pic.

BUT I did it AFTER I SAW internal pips except malposition one.

Have you removed them from the nest and into the bator for hatching?
If she is going to kill chicks I would just take them, I just had two bad broody times in the past month.
If you have a bator and want to be 100% sure on chicks I would. Its easy to brood them too and much safer for the chicks!

this is my unexpert opinion, and esp after you witnessed what she did.

I did i just grabbed then hen i got the chick and put it in the incubator i got the other 3 eggs and put them in and i separated the chick with a piece of cardboard from the other 3 eggs as i heard it can damage the other baby chicks while they are hatching i was told that the chicks jump over the egg if this is not true please tell me and i will take the cardboard away. The chick is ok and i heard a cheep from one of the eggs all going fine hope ill find 4 baby chicks in the morning
