Lets talk about pasty butt. I have one chick that I've cleaned a few times. It builds up on its butt and gets hard. It's a runt and seems weaker than the others. I moved it and three of its mates into their own area With water that I added probiotic and electrolytes too. Is this the proper thing to do. I really want to save this chick. It's a blue laced red Wyandotte that is showing show quality colors at 3 weeks of age. It's the one that I assisted hatch that had to absorb its yolk and then I tied off the umbilical and snipped it.

Put ACV in the water. I soak there butts in warm water then wipe the cluster off. Then get a q-tip and rub a little olive oil around the butt. Keeps it from sticking when they poo. Works for me.

Raw Apple cider vinegar. I do 4TBLS to 1 gal of water but for you runt you would do better with the save a chick for a couple day. Specially since he had yolk issues.

From what I have read AVC goes a long way. While 4 tbsp wont kill them seems a bit much??

I only use 1 tbsp per gallon. Again in my situation it always works.

NO! I put mine outside at 2-3 weeks old. Don't care what time of year it is. Well, I am in SC. Never gets below freezing here too much. Even when it dropped below 30 they were fine. I have noticed younger chickens will huddle even when it's 80 outside. It's a protection thing. If it's that warm outside I would, and this is me, take the heat lamps out. Once mine go outside they get no more heat lamps the rest of there life. That's why they are outside. Actually after a week or so I turn the lamps off in the house to start to get them use to the outside.

Yep, ditto all this. Hard chicken mama here. Tho I did have a bit of worry about my broody and her new chicks out in the torrent we had this am... They're fine, tho, just came in from watching mama teaching them to attack cats that really were minding their own bizniss... Lol

Grumble Grumble....I'm having a hard time with my bator temp, and while I think I have it figured out I'm still concerned about my hatch. I had the temps sitting pretty for two days before I put those eggs in. Then we had a random freezing spell and of courses heat is broken. My house temp was about 65. I sat the eggs IN the incubator with the lid propped open for about 6 hours to reach 75 degrees. Then closed the lid. It took FOREVER to warm up to 99.5. 4 times over the last 36 hours I have seen 98 or once a 97 in there.

Right now it is warming back up after I turned.
But it had been 99.5-99.9 for 12 hours prior.

I'm only on day 2... at 48ish hours...am I screwed?

And can somebody explain the wafer thermostat to me? Should I expect to be able to place the turn handle thing at the same position (that I marked) that gave me wonderfully consistent temps last time and have the same temp this time? Or should I have to fiddle with it again?

Oh gosh I hope there's hope for them... Everybody in the house is excited for a new Silkie. Grrrrrr. Stupid weather.

you should be ok yet, but get it where it needs to be! you have fan model? try for 100 until day 7 candle now. If you have to put it in a closet, run an extension cord.

From what I have learned is they will put more weight on sooner and feather a WHOLE lot faster the sooner they are outside and no heat lamps! Plus there attitude changes once outside. They LOVE IT! They are sooo much happier outside.I think a lot of people worry to much about them. Which is understandable, they don't want to lose there chickens. I am new to incubating, but not raising chickens. Chickens are very tough and durable birds. That's why anybody can raise them. I always say this but

, they are just chickens. If you treat them as such your birds will be healthy and live along time.
