Thanks for the welcome! Here's one chick that hatched, we've dubbed it the Armadillo! LOL he has shell all stuck on its back walking around!

Is it bad that I've got 7 days left on one hatch 14 on another and I'm planning my next hatch? I REALLY REALLY want some HRIR's anybody know where I can get some eggs? I love the one single one I have. She literally crawls into my lap for treats. I think I need a few more. I also think I need some more Buff Orpingtons.

What are your favorites? Where did you find hatching eggs ( if you did). And why do you like them?

QUESTION: Upon gathering eggs today I had 15... I didn't gather yesterday so I expected a decent number... Problem? I only have 7 hens. Is it possible for a hen to lay twice?

QUESTION 2: Three eggs had dents... looked like a pip. I am assuming one of the hens pecked them. Is there a reason why they would peck at their own eggs? A deficiency?

So I'm considering trying something, and it's probably a bad idea but I only have three chicken eggs left that haven't hatched in the incubator and once those are done I really want to try hatching more eggs. The only problem is I don't have any eggs to put in the bator. So... I'm thinking about trying some of the free range, cage free, and organic eggs from Wal Mart. I know, I know, none of those things mean that the eggs will be fertile, and the refrigeration and age could make the eggs useless for hatching, but hey why not. I don't have any more than ten dollars in 48 eggs, and if I can hatch one chick out of those 48, I'll consider that a success. My plan is to break open eggs out of each dozen to check for fertility, and if I find a fertile egg I'll place the rest of that carton into the incubator. I'll continue this process until I'm out of eggs or I find a fertile egg. If I find fertile eggs great, if not my wife says we can eat omelets, and every other food that she can think of that requires eggs for the next three or four days, that way this project won't be a total waist. I really don't have high hopes for the eggs but I bought four different types from Wal Mart, and each one comes from a different farm, so maybe, just maybe one of these farms had a rogue rooster running around. I know people have had some success using trader joes, and whole foods eggs, but has anyone ever tried Wal Mart eggs, and if so what was your experience with them?

THIS IS A CHECKIN TO SAY I miss you guys, I will try to get some time to get on tomorrow.

Rennerae - got your zip .. ty

Chirpingcricket and sum - TY

I have not tried safari but firefox did not run right on my pc
no idea why

Sumi said goosey pictures make her want to get geese too ... and i also agree it is time for more goosey pictures
and she suggested doug give the hen some of the incubator chicks to raise
doug said he was afraid the cat might get them

cody42 had a rough day of running errands with the toddlers ( mine are a little older but i remember those days and can sympathize!! )
cody has 8 turkeys, 7 ducks, and 4 guineas with two more working on breaking out and plae 8 chicken eggs under a broody hen and six in the bator ... 7/8 under broody made it and 4/6 bators made it to lock down and seem to be progressing ..pics posted on post 15946
and some on 15947 as well !! so so cute cody !!

Tony candled day 7 and threw our 7 infertiles and has to cull the delaware he got at the flea market

aww sharron shared pics !!! post 15951 -21 brahmas and 1 blue wheaten cross

aww .. doug had to put the second chick down this morning (yeah they are just chickens but we all love them and knowing that doesn't often change how hard it is to cull one when it has to be done)

from all of us

Tony said that sharon's brahmas look like darks to him

jime said they had Sebastopol geese that were gotten rid of because they were mean too

Sumi had lovely words for doug on post 15959

lizanne had6/12 safeway eggs hatch last night
and sadly lost one that was malpositioned .. cute chicks though - post 15960 and in a moment of weakness got 3 mixed bantams from the feed store when going to get food

cochins was wanting to breed geese but now is thinking two girls might be better .. the one she sold had never hurt anyone but were very antisocial

chicknfun - got ya !!

chichsooner says staggered hatches stink and ironically her last two hatchers were the first given to the broody hen

cochins shared another goosey pic with a story -15968 and YAY !!

chicksooner said that is one spoiled goose lol

and Sumi said she gives up she definitely needs a goose !!

sumi is broody and said you could probably talk her into hatching anything at the moment lol i so know that feeling ... oh wait i am hatching again lol but i want more !! hee hee

cochins suggested turkeys as well lol

mikkles asked what happeded to lucy - cochins could not keeo her cause she has a tendency to pick on the ducks and increased the food bill a lot so she found her a free range home

Oz posted a special action request from McMurray's - everyone feel free to read and join in .. its post 15980

sharron also has more pipping in the bator from shipped eggs
and is glad tony thinks her chicks are dark brahmas as she has no place to put lights !!

Wax myrtle accidentally but 10 eggs in the bator somehow instead of putting it away and told sharron that avie is a sign she should give in to the sudden urge to have another budgie

Chickenofthe VI joined us in the chat -
th
and asked If the chicks have dried, could I open the bator and take them out? Or will it harm the other pips and non pipped eggs? Plus, today is day 18 for some shipped buff rocks I got as well, so I have to put them on lockdown too... Could I open bator and place them in as well, even though the first lockdown hasn't finished yet?
I think as long as you mist the inside of the bator (not the eggs) and do it quickly it is ok to take out the hatched and possibly throw in the eggs ... but i will scroll and see what other advice , if any was given
and ty fo the zip will add it to the others as i work on the map!!

Doug welcome ChickVI oh and he was taking the broody off the nest on day 23 but heard chirping from the eggs so back she went

Doug ... as per one of my last summaries... i am working on poutting everyone on a map for us and i asked for zip codes ..again lol

Rennerae asked if its bad she is planning her 3rd hatch already ... and ive considered HRIR myself but have no idea where to get them

rennerae aslo asked :
What are your favorites? (breeds i am assuming) Where did you find hatching eggs ( if you did). And why do you like them?
I like the jersey giants and am hatching some now..well they are in lcokdown
I got eggs from a great lady here on BYC
We love them because they are big birds but also very friendly birds !!

QUESTION: Upon gathering eggs today I had 15... I didn't gather yesterday so I expected a decent number... Problem? I only have 7 hens. Is it possible for a hen to lay twice?
I say yes ... I had a white hen that would lay once in the morning and once at night every other day ...knew they were hers because she was the only white egg layer i had
anyone elsee? opinions?

QUESTION 2: Three eggs had dents... looked like a pip. I am assuming one of the hens pecked them. Is there a reason why they would peck at their own eggs? A deficiency?
I had a hen that would accidentally peck the eggs when she would try to move them but i think it can be a sign of defiency too .. but no expert here ... again .. anyone else?

Cody asked :
I know people have had some success using trader joes, and whole foods eggs, but has anyone ever tried Wal Mart eggs, and if so what was your experience with them?
I have not tryied to hatch them before cody but it is funny you should mention it ... i noticed in the last dozen that we got ...there were indeed fertile eggs in that dozen not al lbut some .. so maybe its possible

Sally checked in to say she misses us and will try to be on some time tommorow
