Quote:I don't have anything to weigh eggs with. I didn't add near the water this time on lockdown and Im going to release some more everytime it bumps above 70.Doug - Do you ever weigh your eggs? If it is a humidity issue, why not try weighing them once? It can be a pain, but I believe it's the most accurate way to monitor egg weight loss.
Hi everyone! When I was turning the eggs a few days ago, I smelled something bad. I found the bad egg and removed it. It looked like it had never started developing. Then yesterday was day 14 so I candled. I had to remove 2 more clears and a blood ring
So now I only have 8 out of the original 14 left in the incubator.![]()
1 very early death (BCM)
1 blood ring with a dead embryo (EE)
3 scrambled yolks from shipping (All BCM)
1 stinker that was not developing (BCM)
In the incubator I still have.
1 EE
2 SC (these look very healthy. They have bright red veins and movement!)
5 BCM (I saw movement in a few)
So does this all sound normal or am I doing something wrong?
Quote: I hope I see them hatching as I read!!! awesome packaging!
Quote: I NEED THAT! OMG! knowing me I am allergic to something in it : (
Dogs can be horrible, people are so ignorant to keeping dogs on their own property, most don't realize they are liable if they destroy our flocks! When I first moved to Tn, my father hatched around 75 babies for me and I raised them from day old, as they got older I started letting them out of the coop and letting them free range. It worked out good for the first year, but then a couple of the neighbors dogs came in and cleaned me out in 5 minutes. I cried like a baby and swore I would never do it again. Here I am 10 years later and I am starting all over again. This time I am putting them in runs, no free ranging on my farm anymore, and hopefully with them being in the runs attached to the coops I won't have to worry about Chicken snakes getting my eggs.![]()
HA!
I have heard of this as well! Never had to do it though, but I wish I would have thought of it at my old house with my garden!hi, sometime we use bar soap to help keep predators away. Deer dont seem to like the smell of irish spring, we would hang it on a tree or post and every once in a while rub it... cause the outside gets funky and it help renew the scent. I havent done it in a while though and it was mostly for deer. The fox here dont mind us, we had one run between us and our shed (about 15 feet apart) while we were sitting around a bonfire with our dogs...they will be our biggest problem.
oh NO! calling all eggs, gracie needs eggies!I just cleaned the incubator; none of my BCM's hatchedThree came so close but never internally pipped. Having hatching withdrawl!! Is there a group for that?![]()

wait, so no hawk? YAY!!!I think a hawk got my favorite Juvenile today or last nite!Tina...she was my fav of the juvies since she was the only one that let me pet her and such..and she was out of my first ever hatch!!
I hope she's just hiding and comes out..I worked last nite and Mike locked them up for me...and didn't count...so he's not sure if they were all in for the nite or not!

YAY!! Mike doesn't know which one she is..but we're back to havin 16 chickies runnin around soooo she must've just been REALLY good at hiding!!!So happy!!
I have a feeling the postal system looses ALOT of things! I am so sorry, you should contact them about the shipping methods, did you use the shipping letter that oz wrote? its in the hatching 101 article if you need it, grab it and edit, and don't be afraid to ASK for the way you want your eggs! awwwwwShipped eggs came yesterday. Disappeared in the postal system for 24 hours - frustrating.
Slight corner crush on the box. I was expecting very well wrapped eggs. I got 24 eggs wrapped in papertowels, put in 1/2 egg cartons on their sides in the box. Box was carefully marked "this side up" which kept eggs on their sides..... Was expecting more the bubble wrap, double box, eggs right side up technique, silly me.
3 eggs broken, so had mess to deal with. Few good air cells, couple saddles and some loose. Couldn't tell on several, hoping not scrambled.
Let sit, big side up, for over 24 hours, in 70 degree room, before putting in incubator. Incubator has been right one, so I'm trying putting them in room temp incubator and then letting everything warm up together.
I won't start turning for at least 5 days.
This will be an interesting hatch (I hope we have a hatch). Not only dealing with shipped eggs that had a rough trip, but we are at 8,500 feet which presents it's own challenges with eggs from lower altitude.
Happy Bday to your DD a little late! Thanks and what an awesome post!!
Greetings earthlings
After a 14 hr direct flight I had a moment of panic when the golf bag was a no show. It was found an hr later and cleared customs along with a TV box full of eggs.
I have a busy day. The sun just came up. I have a flight to Bacolod, a dash for supplies and then if I have the energy a 3 hr drive home. If not I will sleep 10 hrs and leave at 3AM.
I am glad I made it.![]()
I love my barreds, but they are too pecky of my little ones I added, the spoiled brats!Just watched my barred rock chase a squirrel up the fence and out of her back yard. She runs a tight ship . . . "Ain't nobody got time for that!" says Gertrude. ;D
And I love my sweet EE who comes and snuggles in my lap to take a nap!
Quote: oh no!!!!
I would give you my three turkey if you were close! The one hisses at me I swear! its only 3 weeks the turd!Pleased to say I finally got my Turkey eggs. But a big disappointment as I was only given 4 eggs. Apparently they lost track of which were which??? I would have only got 3 but I asked if I could take one from the nest. I tried to candle a few to try catch one about half way through or so as my parents leave for the UK again in just under two weeks. I didn't get one
Far along tthough as I felt kinda awkward with someone watching over me and there were 15 odd eggs in the nest. I really wanted to candle that egg again tonight but my phone which the flash with the app the strongest flashlight works fantastic, died and gave up the ghost today. So mad too as I had a number with someone who I might have got Cochin eggs off was in there :0(

oh Mich! gross me out, gag me with a spoon! My.morning started off really gross. my stupid broody hen jumped nesting boxes and i didn't realize it, and collected eggs, very excited thinking my Wheaton AMs were laying.( you probably know were this is going) well i was fixing breakfast before and cracked open the egg and the was a cooking chick :0 grossed me the heck out. now im going to try and break this crazy nest jumping hen, no chicks for her due to stupidity. hope everyone else is having a better day.![]()
SHE DID that on purpose! HA!That happened to me once. My MIL gave us some eggs and I boiled one. When I peeled it... Luckily the egg was in the fridge for days before, so it was dead already, but still. I didn't eat eggs for a long time after that.![]()
is this a serama?
SALLY!!!!![]()
OH THIS is a cool set! love it!!
3DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD Love ya girl! YAY for dad!!Missed 1000+ posts...
HELLO CHICKEN WORLD!
I LOVE SPRING!
I also love the fact that my coop is almost finished! When my dad is finished with it (kind of gave up on building it by myself) it will be as sturdy and safe as a bomb shelter! He is going to even cover the whole thing in the material they use to make the "giant marshmallows in the fields," so no wind and water can get in. Also, there is going to be shingles, and a netting over top of the run! I am now just waiting for him to get home. He lives in the middle of Canada!![]()
Gorgeous chickies!! Congrats!!This is the Silver Sebright mixed with a polish roo... for now its very cute.
the two Silks. I fixed the boots a bit better. What color will these be? any guess?
two darker serama chicks. also the sweetest of all hatched!
the two gold Serama's. one has a white fluff butt. these two are feisty!
I had a silky hatch and die...the saddle air cell one. lots of blood and goo. it didn't look right either. kind of mushed.
the silverish silky with the boots pipped the wrong end all the way on the bottom of the egg. I was picking it up to see if
it was alive and turned it over to candle and there was a head mashed on the bottom end, side down. it was weak and gasping so I cracked the egg a bit and it fell out the rest of the way. Its the one with curled toes. It is perked up now, although walking duck like. Lol. I'm going to count the hatch as successful. I lost several silks but I truly don't think I could have done any different. Blaming shipping!
