Is there a fool proof way of knowing which chicks are which in the incubator? I know I can't keep opening the incubator to band each chick as it comes out.
Second question. If I give my newer broody chicks, will she stop being broody? It has only been 3 days.

I take a broody chicken out of the area and put her in iso. Bare ground and a roosting pole in there. That's it. Nothing that she can make a nest. After 2 days she's good to come back.

I am going to be getting a basket or two. My broodies are going to have such staggered hatches I was hoping the baskets would help keep the bator clean for the eggs that are going to take longer. I really don't want to have to get both bators out.

I don't know about giving a fresh broody chicks. Sumi could answer this.

When I have different varieties hatching together that need separating, first I consider if the youngsters can be visually identified. For example, baby javas are black and white, but buff orphingtons are yellow and black australorps are black/gray. This makes for easy identification and separation. If your hatching two or three kinds that are visually similar, just put the eggs into shallow plastic organizers sold at dollar stores and walmarts. They looke like little jails with floors. Keep your different breeds sorted from lockdown in these, and you'll have no problems. Just be sure to note how high they can be and still clear your incubator heater and top. The closer to those without touching, the better. A few chicks can be inspired jumpers after a few hours.

10 incubators, one for each breed (and fill them up, its makes for a better hatch!)

I think Orps make the best moms. Even Big Boy watches over his off spring.
