Diary & Notes ~ Air Cell Detatched SHIPPED Chicken Eggs for incubation and hatching

Wait a bit longer. I heard they can go up to 36 hours. It looks pretty lively still, so don't worry.

But... but.... I can't help but worry... The shell isn't wiggling, and he/she makes a tiny peep only every now and then.

I don't want something to go wrong because I think this is going to be the only chick I am going to get from these eggs.

If your sure none of the other eggs have pipped I would open and help a little. With your low humidity I would worry that it is shrink wrapped and can't move to zip. If you are going to help start with removing only bits of shell. If you go straight for the membrane and it is not ready to hatch yet you could cause it to bleed to death. Moisten the membrane with warm water but don't put any water where the beak is. Take it slow and wrap in warm moist paper towel and return to the bator after a few minutes. Don't cover the breathing hole with the papertowel. Maybe a little help and some more moisture will get it moving on its own.

So, should I zip all around the edges without taking off the membrane, but just the shell on the outside?

Like in this video?

I find it's easier for the chick to get out if you open the membrane as well. But if you see blood, wet it with a little cold water and put the egg back in the bator.

Sumi knows more about helping hatch. Just be careful with the membrane and watch for any blood.

Don't rush it.

OPEN... OPEN... OOOOPEN! Anything yet?

Ps... When I said the above I was referring to an old commercial (Christmas shoppers waiting for the store to open so they could shop a sale), wasn't referring to the egg. Just FYI. In hopes that little Hope would bust out on his/her own.

I'd be untruthful if I said I wouldn't be a nervous wreck right now. Sumi... I feel like you should be saying, "Scalpel".... Lol! (did I spell that right?)

LOL, Yes you did

Way back when I was stupid I used to rush to help chicks hatch. Didn't end so well. Patience and time really makes a difference. I found wetting the membrane with cold water when it bleeds helps the bleeding stop. Then if you wait an hour and continue on the opposite side from where you zipped. You open the shell just enough so the little one can get out by itself when it's ready. It just needs to get it's toes hooked over the edge of the shell so it can push it off. Unless it's too weak, but usually they get a little oomph when they realise the end is in sight and they are almost free. And then that little thing hatches in your hands

What a feeling. I love it when they wriggle free and look at you with that comical look on their faces and stretch those little wings... Ah, I must get an incubator.

Okay, I did it. I think Hope is very weak, because he/she didn't peep as much as I was expecting. Should I do the other side in half and our? I don't think she/he is positioned right. I am going to do the water test because i candled the rest and didn't really like what I saw... I smushed open an egg that had died on day 8!!!

Hope is so lucky!

Open it, but stop if you see blood. If there's no blood open it enough so she can get out. Check between her legs to see if the yolk's been absorbed before letting her come out of the bottom part of the shell. Don't break the membrane that's attaching her navel to the shell (if it's still attached. She'll do that. She should be happy now if she can stretch her neck at least.

I don't know why I'm saying "she". It'd better be a girl LOL
