so i have an incubation question. I got a small number of shipped eggs 2 weeks ago. started with 11...2 had small cracks so tried the wax trick and one developed but quit..so I'm down to 9. 2 others had no development so they're gone as of today. so I'm at 7 which is how many the turner holds. I'm wondering if going from being hand turned about 3-5 times a day to for the first 14 days to being turned every hour these last few days will do more harm than good? or should I just keep doing the hand turning since these 7 seem to be ok so far? my incubator is the brinsea mini btw (not sure if it makes a difference, just trying to be thorough) ;)

OMG! I just put in my shipped Barred Rock eggs. There was one that was a little long and I was afraid maybe it was a double yolker so I checked. Nope, but it did have a suspicious spot in it. I debated putting it in or not, and decided what the heck. Well I just went to check temps and the dang thing was so tall it cracked on top as it turned and hit the hardware inside  Luckily I got it out right away before it penetrated more than just the out shell. Will have to be careful what I put there in the center.

question: broddy hen hatched 6 of 8 chicks how do I wait before taking the eggs out from under her? don't want them to go bad.
I leave any viable looking unhatched eggs in the nest for at least 2 more days after the hen got up. I didn't used to hold much hope for unhatched eggs until I got a surprise one day. I went to feed mom and chicks in the morning and found a half-dead, ice cold chick lying in the run. Mom had all her chicks with her and they were fine. I warmed up the little one and took her outside to add her to mom's clutch, all the time wondering where the heck she came from, as I didn't have any other broodies sitting at the time. Then I noticed the egg I thought was off, but didn't remove from the broody box was missing... Closer investigation revealed some egg shells in the corner of the box. The chick hatched during the night, under the broody, who went back to the box to sleep in it with her chicks. It hatched 2 days after the other eggs. The chick recovered from getting chilled and was fine afterwards and Mom happily added her to the clutch.

You could and should candle them to check if they look viable, but I didn't think of it at the time.

Or get a bigger incubator. What if you decide to hatch some ducks eggs?

The more often you turn during the first 14 days the better. So the chicks could benefit if you do the opposite of what you're thinking of now for your next hatch

After day 14 turning is not as vitally important anymore. Just continue hand turning as you've been doing until lockdown. Good luck with the hatch!
