Checked on Franken-Marans this morning and she pipped through her major vein and looks to have busted her yolk too. Not looking good for her... sigh.

What's going on with these guys? I'm so sorry to hear that. Big

and wish I could give it to you in person. It sucks losing chicks like this.

Grr... So mad at my puppy right now.
So I'm sitting in a room, putting the new cage together for the guinea pigs, and all of a sudden, I hear screaming:
QUACKKKK
QUUUUUAAAACCCCCKKKK!!
So I ran outside as soon as I heard Daffy, a little Mallard duck.
And my dog was carrying Daffy in her mouth! I immediately ran and made Annabelle let go of her. She seemed okay, but then I looked down at my arm, covered in blood... and lots of it.
That dog bit BOTH of Daffy's wings! So we were sitting there, applying pressure to her wings with some old cloth, with my little sisters all crowded around me petting her.
When the bleeding slowed down, we put her back with Donald, a Mallard drake. Fingers crossed she'll be okay tonight.
:fl
So sorry :( My dogs have cost me I think 18 chickens so far. I do my best to prevent it but sometimes they get over on me...

I broke my dog by getting an e-collar with remote. Put her on a lease, cranked it all the way up(127) I have pyr so yoay not want it so high. Walked her around the yard and up to very chicken, as soon as she should interest, by either lunging or raising ears, I zapped her and told her to leave it sternly, did it for an hour. That was the only time I had to do that. Now when I say leave it sternly she stops in her tracks and my birds can walk around her. Just a suggestion

Thanks! I'll try that. But I can't supervise her at all times, but then again I can't keep her in her crate most of the day...
Eh, I'll think of something.

We have ours either outside on a line (until fence is complete) or in the house when we are not home. Tried the crate thing she kept getting out

Well, I had an interesting day so far. I went to give the chickens some treats, saw their water bowls were low, so I went out again, collected water, back to the coop, topped up the bowls, chatted with them for a minute and went out again. The door is sticky to open and close and it usually takes me a few seconds every time, so in total I spent a good minute outside that door... I noticed a movement on the ground just as had the door shut the last time. It was a Boomslang and it was not even 2 feet from my bare feet and rapidly moving away, so I'd rather not know how close it was to me before it started moving

And when I think back, I was standing outside that door 3 times... My guardian angel was with me today, that's for sure.

I ran to call DH who helped me look for it but we couldn't find it anywhere. Still haven't, the gardener's been looking also. It just disappeared. I would feel so much better knowing that snake is far from me and mine. I really like snakes, but these guys are so dangerous, I'd rather not have them anywhere our house, my family or my chickens!

I'm so relieved that first of all it didn't bite me and secondly I saw it before it got into the chickens' house. I used to leave the door open a crack for ventilation, with a window open on the opposite side. It would've had no problem going into the coop.

That was a close call. I'm glad that your ok.

I'm thankful that we have very few poisonous creatures here in MN.
