Diary & Notes ~ Air Cell Detatched SHIPPED Chicken Eggs for incubation and hatching

A chick's first meal occurs when they consume the amnion fluid before internal pipping and in-ovo feeding may 'jump-start' development, improving the nutritional status of the newly hatched chick.
Positive effects have been observed with solutions containing salt, sucrose, maltose, and dextrin β-hydroxy-β-methyl butyrate, arginine, egg white protein, and zinc methionine.

In ovo feeding has been observed to:

  • improve glycogen and metabolic energy status
  • increase hatchability
  • advance morphometic development of the intestinal tract and mucin barrier
  • enhance expression of genes for brush border enzymes (sucrase-isomaltase, leucine aminopeptidase) and their biological activity
  • enhance expression of nutrient transporters, SGLT-1, PEPT-1 and NaK ATPase
  • improve bone development and reduce leg asymmetry of hatchlings, and
  • increase breast muscle at hatch.

I had to rig something for humidity fast this time too, since I have no room for my dish with a sponge, too many eggs in hatch this time around!
I do have the two trays under the eggs but its not enough this packed, I think the fan isnt picking up surface area on them as much since its jammed

LL

I have the sponges near holes so I can spray water in with a spray bottle lol

This was my rig job last night, I may use it from now on instead of on the wire with the eggs!

caulked! excuse the rusty caulk, I had a nail in the caulk and then I had tape over it to keep the caulk good for next use

I had to cut the other end down as my sponge is big, I still had to cut my sponge though.
Works like a charm, plenty of room for eggs to hatch AND it holds extra water to pull from!

I used two galv screwed to the side of the bator

Great idea!!! Wish I could have something like that rigged without having to open my incubator top.

Ducky Eggies came!!! awesome!! I candled and weighed them! I am making an detailed incubation chart now, gonna use @ozexpat s and add a few columns for more individual egg details.

ABOUT THE SHIPPING....
They did come wonderfully packaged with one minor exception.....FROM NC to PA
The good is they were double boxed, bubble wrapped MOSTLY AIR CELL UP HOWEVER.......
The middle box had two levels of eggs, the top row of eggs ended up somewhat sideways for lack of a tad more space filler, and they DO IN FACT have a tad loose air cells, the ones on the bottom that were tight together and not laid over are in AHHHHMAZING shape! I am not worried about the top eggs air cells except one that has about and inch movement. BUT it does show how much difference it can make having them stay air cell up! I think the box may have shifted or something that the top was so layed over.

Anyways, its good data for our collect for shipped eggs too! packed perfectly other than having just a tad more stuffing on the top set of eggs. But again, they are still in half decent shape, double boxed, bubble wrapped air cell up is key! the outerbox was a priority mail 12x12x8.5 the inner was the square priority 7x7x6

OK, so what is the lowest temp your eggs have survived and hatched? I feel so stupid; I was tired and forgot to turn the bator back on after I rolled eggs last night about 10:00 This morning they are 68 degrees
