Diary & Notes ~ Air Cell Detatched SHIPPED Chicken Eggs for incubation and hatching

NOTES: The yolk of an egg is held in place on each end by what is called Chalaza. These are delicate cords that keep the yolk centered in the egg. When you crack open an egg, you notice a white stringy thing on the yolk, this is the Chalaza. When eggs are shipped they encounter many things that are not favorable to their well being. Postal handlers that toss the packages, machinery that sorts the mail, bumpy vehicle rides and the such. So by the time the eggs get to you they are pretty much scrambled inside. So if you are going to by eggs and have them shipped to you, be aware that the viability drops to near zero. Yes there are those rare instances when they arrive safely but it is always a gamble. http://fluffybottomsfarm.blogspot.com/p/incubating-and-hatching-eggs_9.html

SOOOO my little Purple Rain eggster is alive! There is a tiny embryo in there but its a LOT smaller and less developed than the other eggs I set at the same time...I don't really have a lot of home for the long run but pretty neat that it's at least hanging in there.

Also it appears that the air cells have reattached on some of by BLRW eggs, of the 14 I started with, I have three that are alive on day 7. At least that is something!

Great going... your doing what you can! So cool they can re attach! did you read what I posted earlier about air cells and shipping damage, it should be a few posts ago lol... interesting

Yeah, good info! I'm really torn though, about when I should start turning them, if at all...what do you think? I have not been turning them to this point, of course.

And its 7 days? you didnt turn at all? I was torn as well, but I read up on it and did you know that a hen rolls her eggs at least 50 times a day? WOW I will have to figure out where I read that though....

This is in the first post.... its how I turned mine.... My eggs were totally scrambled though!!! I didnt really turn just kind flopped... see pic

NOTES: Pic 1 BELOW is before I turned today and 2nd is after... very gently I leaned them the other way psss they are silkies and very tiny. I read more this morning and decided to start turning like this 3x day, I just turned at lunch so they settled for 24 hrs and then set in bator w/o turning for 52 hours... I havent decided when I will candle yet, def not until day 7 though! I DID move the EGGS and NOT the carton!I moved the thermometers and hygro around too! just happens it looks the like the pic is flopped!

Ok, here is the problem tho...I will be at the office all day tomorrow and Friday...so I can either turn them once in the morning and once at night, or turn on the automatic turner...

How do eggs set in an auto turner?

If the turner lays them flat, can you rig the egg carton on it so they stay upright, not sure how a turner rotates them : (

It's one of those where they sit upright and the turner just rotates, I honestly don't think they go more than 45 degrees from vertical so I wonder if it might be alright...arghghg no way to know! I might start them turning and then check their progress tomorrow.
