So I am procrastinating letting my chickens out! When I was locking everyone up last night we had a visitor in the trees above. First one I have seen since we moved here, and of course it was 5 pm and the hippy neighbors come driving down their driveway and story ends here.

I will be so upset if I loose a bird to it! I was so torn on the open run idea, I always had chickens in enclosed runs and soooo wanted a huge area for them to wonder so I made a bigger run in the woods and left the top open.

I cover my runs. I also let everyone free range. You just have to accept the risk or keep them locked up tight. My birds are so happy getting to run free that I will accept the risk. Now I don't let really young ones out with out a good cover. I think my birds are big enough that the hawks leave them alone. Raccoons on the other hand will take advantage of an easy meal.

i threw 2 dogs out to watch them, stupid dogs just keep crying to come back in! its beautiful out today too!

I have 2 of the biggest babies for dogs. I told Dh the next dog is going to be a livestock guardian. One that is going to be an outside dog. Worthless mutts. Good thing I love them.

The eggs look good today. The incubator is a tad cool. It's currently holding at 99, but it's low was 97. I'd be a lot happier if it were bouncing between 98 and 100, so I squeaked up the thermostat dial just a hair. The water wiggler was 98.6.

I think that was from coming up from 97 earlier. I'm guessing that the dip is from the kids adding cold water to the 'bator. No biggie, but I do need to remind them to let the teacher do it.
I candle tomorrow! I'm going to be using the overhead projector in the science room. I've rigged up a black out drape with some left over lanolium and a paper towel tube. Hopefully the light will be bright enough (should be, it's an overhead projector for heavens sakes) and we will be able to project onto the wall. If not, it will be bright enough for the kids to come look at it in small groups.

Sounds like a great time for the kids to learn. If I remember those overheads right that bulb will get pretty hot but they might be better than what they were 20 years ago.

They still get pretty hot. The egg won't be touching the glass though, I'll have it supported with the tube. I also won't be leaving the egg on the overhead very long. Thirty or so seconds each. It may not seem like a lot of time, but I've got twenty eggs to go through!

I know those old projectors have really hot bulbs in them, the kids are going to be amazed! I hope they have a way of closing off the sunlight in the room!

I wish I could see that. Would be neat to see up on a big screen.
