Diary & Notes ~ Air Cell Detatched SHIPPED Chicken Eggs for incubation and hatching

I had a long post typed out with pictures, but when I clicked submit, a message popped up saying that since I was new, my post needed to be approved by a moderator. That's never happened before and I've been here for nearly 8 months. Has anyone else had this happen? Oh well, guess I'll type it out again.
ditto! MODERATOR SUMI!! LOL

Sally your the shipped eggs expert. I expect you to know all things.

I will have to see if I can find anything on chick movement. Not sure that I will find much since it would be hard to monitor embryo movement 24 hrs a day and then compile enough research to make any accurate statements as to how the embryo moves. Did that come out right?

Ok, here's my goose egg. I'm 100% sure that it's on day 27 so it should hatch within the next 3 days. Temperatuers ran a steady 99.5 degrees checked using 5 different thermometers. Air cell development is perfect and I checked it by weighing the egg weekly. The emrbyo is also very active.

I will do anything to get this egg to hatch, so if you have any advice, please share. This egg doesn't look like it's ready to hatch.

Here's a top view. It looks normal, but there is more space in the small end of the egg.

Here's the clear spot in the small end of the egg that I was talking about. The inner membrane with blood vessels never reached it. The spot is stationary and does not move when I turn the egg.

Here's a better picture. You can see the clear spot, the membrane with the blood vessels, and then the dark area is the embryo.

By the way, the dates in the pictures are way off.
oh my! that is strange!! I will get you help! sending an pm

Sharing some research......

Turning should be done through day 17 of incubation, after which the chick is positioning itself for the hatching process. The most important period is from day 1 through day 12, when the chorion and allantois are developing and eventually fuse, forming the chorioallantois. During this time the most critical period is from day 3 through day 7, when the circulatory system is developing and beginning to function. Researchers have found that turning is not necessary past as early as day 14 of chicken egg incubation, although most systems continue to turn the egg through days 17 to 19.http://extension.missouri.edu/publications/DisplayPub.aspx?P=G8353

Thinking about stopping the turning at day 17! But of course I need to see this in a clinical study or figure out how to read these references!

I pm'd CelticOaksFarm. Hopefully she'll have an idea. Thanks so much for trying to help! I'm really worried about this egg. I tried to do everything right and I was looking forward to a gosling this Saturday but it doesn't look like that'll happen...

I am in the process of negotiating 12 peafowl eggs for my end of may egg run. Those puppies aren't cheap. I am not sure how well they travel. I guess if I can get a breeding pair out of them i will be happy

Ok this will be blunt so that I cover the important stuff. I keep emotion out of it so that I can get the details explained

(gotta use this disclaimer as it isnt that I dont care, but I am clinical in how treat hatching eggs)

  1. Goose eggs are NOTHING like chicken eggs on any level other than their shape
  2. They develop differently and candle differently
  3. You are seeing what appears like a normal egg
  4. I would like to see a better picture candled from the top showing how well the air cell has developed
  5. Geese dont hatch in any form of a hurry
  6. I NEVER go into lockdown until I candle and can SEE the gosling has pipped internally.
  7. Then and ONLY then will I lock down and raise the humidity
  8. This assures you if the gosling needs a few extra hours to turn or of lower humidity they get it
  9. Stop turning is fine the last three days as it helps the baby turn into position
  10. Keep checking every 6-8 hours for an internal pip
  11. Once you see an internal pip get that humidity up and then go into lockdown
  12. DONT open the bator again until that gosling has hatched
  13. It will internall pip and then just lay there and rest
  14. Will turn inside the egg and look like its doing nothing
  15. External pip and rest more
  16. turn and rest
  17. punch more shell and rest
  18. They can take 2 full days to truly show any real progress
  19. RESIST helping, opening the bator or over reacting (this is the hardest part)
  20. dont not open the bator once it has externally pipped
  21. do not open the bator once it has externally pipped
  22. do not open the bator once it has externally pipped
