it is pure organic cold pressed coconut oil that you consume. Also, I added a dab of organic cold press ingestiable Castor oil which has those antimicrobial properties. Antibiotic ointment actually has a base of white petrolatum which is a chemical. Though both serve as the goal I was to reach "to keep the membrane from drying out" I chose what I did because I did not have antibiotic ointment without pain relief. So I choose something very safe. Without chemicals.
Actually petrolatum is Vaseline and in most skin care products like Oil of Olay.
I guess we all have info to share that's why we are here and I appreciate everyones insight and help.
Thank you.

My concerns are not the inactive ingredients such as petroleum jelly or coconut oil. The derivation of the water insoluble medium that is suspending the active ingredients is of no real consequence. My concern is that you have potentially created a moist environment - ideal for bacterial growth - without the protection of antibiotics.

I have an aversion to ointments period and the only place I have used them on myself is on a corneal abrasion where the eye simply rinses antibiotics out. In my often less than humble opinion, antibiotic creams are more suited to these tasks as the lack of petroleum jelly creates less "goo".

I hope by now you were able to hatch the chick. We are indeed all learning all the time on here. I have little expertise in chick first aid but have spent more than half my life surrounded by pharmaceuticals.

Hopefuly others here will learn from your tribulations and pick up some antibiotic cream from the 99 cents store.

I wish you well

Sweet, she's probably thrilled to bits to see some chicken friends! Reminds me off a young pullet I had in the house once. We hatched some chicks and I put them under the heat lamp and she saw them... The chicks cheeped like mad so I covered them with a cloth, just to comfort them as they like being covered by something while they are teeny tiny still. Shame the pullet went nuts. She looked and looked for them and cheeped and carried on until I showed her where the chicks were and then she HAD to get in there with them... Here she is with Fenella, my most difficult assisted hatch to date (but that's a story for another day)

Very Sweet!

My 2 pullets from the NYD hatch-a-long took in all of the January 23rd chicks. I was very surprised. They weren't even 1 month old yet and they were already acting like mothers.

Sorry about the bad quality.

Preening!!

POOP

It's adorable! Can't you get us a nice pic of it's navel? What I can see in the pics look o.k. Just want to check the area. Did you put antibiotic cream on?

Quote: I think this one just wanted some company, shame. She was such a sweetheart. I had a long, strange, staggered hatch once. 2 Chicks hatched, then 2 more about 2 weeks later and finally, after about another 2 weeks the last surviving one. (Did I mention it was it was a strange hatch?) The 2 oldest chicks totally mothered the youngest one. They actually called her when I gave them treats, like a mom hen would. It was the cutest thing. That chick was horrendously spoiled!

Quote: And a JOB WELL DONE! Thank you!

Older son removed the powdery new shavings I put in layer coop last weekend said he dont know what I am talking about all the chickens are fine. I went to check on them finally this afternoon and he is right, they seem fine! I have no clue whats going on, unless it was from the new shavings brand I got which is really powdery or the fact that I gave them dry mash and they had gotten used to the ff??? I dont friggen know, so I will keep a good watch on all of them, I am not waisting the Tylan if I see nothing wrong, I did do ACV in the water though.

update..15 total out of 22 eggs...4 eggs still in hatcher cuz I think they are still good...but not sure...2 I egg-topsied and had fully developed chicks but died, those were maran eggs. but so far I'm pleased with what I've got...of the 4 cream leg bar eggs I had 1 clear and 3 hatched.
I feel very lucky because I got 2 girls and 1 boy...so I'm going to see about breeding these and will separate from the rest of the flock since they are a rare breed. I've turned into a chicken fanatic and I may need to seek help...LOL
YAY!!! Gosh I always love striped chicks!! remind me to take a pic of my new blue splash silkie with stripe like back!! she is so cute!!
