I was all excited getting ready.to set eggs for the easter hatch & heard chirping from under my broody hen. Yay!!! She was sitting 6 eggs. Needless to say, shame on me... I didn't move her away from the other girls and a big fight occurred inside her nest box. In the process the one chick that hatched got hurt. I removed the naughty hen that started the fight and then my broody girl went nuts and started attacking the baby & a zipping egg. Agggh! Luckily my hatcher is spotless in preparation for the Easter hatch so I wisked away the surviving chick and 4 eggs. 1 of which was pipped and is just now starting to zip. This is not how I planned my day! Lol!

Sally, did you set eggs for the Easter hatch?
its good you were nearby. i am glad you saved the eggs

i found my hovabator genesis unplugged with 41 eggs on day 7. my housekeeper, bless her, probably did it by accident 6 hrs earlier. time will tell if it was too long.

Oh no! :fl hopefully the eggs kept better temps the the bator.

Do you know much about broodies? I hope this is because it was her first hatch. I'm scared to let her try again.

i dont know a lot about broodies but I am not sure she can be blamed for all the confusion. Even so, unless she is of emotional or financial value, its not a behavior I would be looking for and she would be a curry stew my next weekend - but thats just me.

Yes... That's my thoughts too. My husband's uncle wants some layers so she just might be volunteered. Course... Broodies don't make very good layers... Hmmm?

Thanks to Sally Sunshine I was able to save the one lone survivor of an expensive and terrible hatch. This sweet baby was peeping away on Day 22 so I made a small pip and then slowly more following her directions. Here she is in the egg and a few days later. She was peeping the whole time I was assisiting her out of the shell. I never had any blood. I call her my $200. chicken.
Sally is a blessing to us all!! Generous, kind and selfless with her time to talk all us crazy newbies through our first of many neurotic hatchings! Sally you are loved!! :)

She's a lavender orp that I had sitting on my Dorking eggs when she went broody. I had the orpington only for eggs and planned on giving them to Uncle John until she decided to sit on eggs. I didn't know if my Dorkings would be good layers or not. Well, they outlay the orps so off they were going to go. I only have two of them, 1 EE who thinks she's a Dorking, and I don't know how many Dorkings without going to count the separate pens. Lol! Somewhere around 11 adult Dorkings, 26 chicks... Plus the additional 5 rescued from my CrAzY broody today. 2 hatched 3 still in the eggs. And then, I'll blame it on Easter, 42 just started for the Easter hatch. What am I doing???

:D

Awww what happened to the injured chick?

good! do you have any save a chick or electrolites? if not you could add a sprinkle of brown sugar in their water, she is drinking?
He is. And I do have brown sugar. How much should I put in? He is still not fluffy (just his head). I say he because I feather sexed him this morning and both rows of feathers were the same length. He peeped like a maniac last night because he was lonely in the incubator.
