Are they cutting their feet on something to get the infection started? Are they limping? do they climb on something and hop down? Not sure I would call it bumble foot yet. Hay doesn't seem like a surface that would cause bumble foot. Mine were kept on shavings that were never dry and I did not keep them spotless. There has to be something else going on. Also tricideNeo is on my list of bumble foot treatments. i did a lot of research on it when I had a roo start limping.

One of the hay bails was full of thorns from thistles. A portion ended up on the ground before I noticed. It's possible that they ended up with thorns in their feet as my hands were covered in thorns by the time I noticed. It was not fun trying to pick them all out.

Although the thorns are a possibility, I ruled them out because I laid that hay bail down just over a week ago and I started to notice signs of bumble foot (before I knew what it was) when the ducklings were only 2 weeks old. When they were 2 weeks old, I had them on horse bedding pellets because I read that the pellets would absorb any water that the ducklings spilled keeping them cleaner.

None of them are limping but if it is an infection, I want to treat it before it gets any worse. I have a few decent pictures from last week, I'll try to upload them in a bit.

Oh and an update about my duckling with the niacin deficiency.

A friend of mine has been keeping her indoors while giving her the niacin supplement. She's been letting her swim, but my little duckling hasn't gotten any movement back in her left leg. It just drags... We both think that permanent damage has been done. Only time will tell.

oh no

we have a pip!

it doesn't get any less exciting does it!

Cochins the thorns would make sense but if they had symptoms before then there would have to be something else. Also 2 weeks old seems a little young for bumble foot. Will be interesting to see what the pics show. I will see if I can find anything too. I am refusing to move from my chair this morning.

Ok Sally here i am back but with a question. myself .. I noitice some hatches as the chicks hatch the humidity goes way up and others ihave had it doesnt .Was just thinking do you think you had the humdity too low before the hatch where the humidity didnt spike. ?
Lack of mositure in the eggs so no spike? ...maybe some shrinkage then some do hatch but think it could be sign to raise it?
Makes sense but any data on that?
