Diary & Notes ~ Air Cell Detatched SHIPPED Chicken Eggs for incubation and hatching

Ok, I need someone to talk me out of this idea.

I was thinking about my eggs because I need these eggs to hatch. There still aren't any internal pip, the air cells are extremely screwed up, and I'm almost positive that I'm going to have mostly mal-positioned chicks.

I didn't want to admit this, but I was really bad with turning. I kept forgetting to do it and for a while, the eggs were only being turned once a day. After so many hatches, you would have thought that I would have known better. (note to self - buy an automatic egg turner)

Anyways, enough with the confessions. Here is my crazy idea. I was thinking about Goosey. I opened her egg because she was unable to internal pip and she made it just fine. What if I went ahead and removed the tops of all 5 eggs, put down antibiotic sab, and checked for mal-positioned chicks. Yes I know I shouldn't intervene if it's not necessary, but the chicks should be able to hatch on their own normally if they are correctly positioned, and I could help those that aren't positioned, right?
Good question Cochins!! Curious to know what the answer for this would be too. Wondered the same with my last hatch, if I was able to intervene in any way due to one chick that never pipped because it had it's beak under it's leg....

the flock is out of there.

I have arrived in manila.

Quote: I don't agree if it doesn't have an internal pip, at least not yet, its too soon. NOW if you can HEAR it chirp and you don't see an internal pip, that means its already starting to acclimate its lungs so you can start assist, otherwise it could be too wet in there yet and you could drown them.

Could you explain the drowning part in more detail?

I don't hear chirping. They aren't internally pipped, but I'm sure that most of them are mal-positioned.

Quote: I wish I could find that pdf from the university, I cant find it now!

I read something about the final stages and absorption, if you ever noticed how fast weight loss occurs during the last 2 days of incubation, it said something about how a chick acclimates its lungs and that's why weight loss is so important, it said something about the embryo creating gases that initiate certain steps! honestly I cant find the pdf file! It was a great read, sorta over my head at times but a lot of it made sense!
I tried searching everything, I think because it was a pdf its not finding it! I cant even remember which uni it was! I need to start saving the files on a key or something!

if you want to take the chance and open one and see how much fluid is in there, perhaps you can create a view hole in one for the sake of the others, its your call. You will probably find its beak extremely low, and then you will have to really be careful to push veins and not cut them if you try to free its beak, what I found with this is usually their beaks are not yet angled correctly, don't worry about freeing the entire thing, one side is fine, if you do get fluid quickly soak it with a Qtip/s until its dry around its beak and set back in the bator so nothing more would run into his beak.

remember, think anatomy before you go digging, wing location, big round eyeball, leg, beak etc!

I wish you luck and pray they are ok

I won't do anything until it's been a full 21 days. If I do decide to do something, it will be tomorrow afternoon. I'll do some research tonight. Thanks again Sally, I greatly appreciate your opinions.

Will be waiting to see what happens tomorrow. Hopefully you will get some chirps and pips so you wont have to go digging.
