Diary & Notes ~ Air Cell Detatched SHIPPED Chicken Eggs for incubation and hatching

My chicks are nearly 2 weeks old and I am curious of their sex. Two have no tail feathers yet and have obvious combs coming in. Three have tail feathers coming in but no obvious combs forming yet. Do you think the two with no tail feathers yet and combs are Roos? These are eggs that came from a mixed lot of Ameraucanas and EEs that were covered by a Black Orpington.

I have a pip! It's one of my silkie eggs. I expected the serama to hatch first. The pip is a little below the last air cell line I drew on day 18. This is day 20. Should I do anything? What if it didn't pip into the air cell?

A little below is fine. You can expect a bit more evaporation in the last three days. Can you take a picture to post? Now comes the long wait, in 6-12 hours... You should start seeing some zipping.

Yep! Looks great! Expect for your humidity to jump up when it starts zipping. With so many in mine hatching, it has jumped up to 81%. I started at 67% just as an example. Don't panic, sometimes it feels like a year passes before they start zipping. As a general rule, you don't want to interfere until you hit the 24 hour mark after the first pip. Yay! Excited for you... Hang in there!

Also Crimson, what I have found is a lot of time when a chick pips a little below the line is... When they start zipping either they zip right above the line or have rotated some and follow the line just a bit above your line.

I had to cull a chick tonight

never gets easier to do.

It had several deformities, how it hatched is not understood as its beak was pretty straight up in the air and it only had one eye, no other side roundness or nuttin. was bad

LOL I showed my DH the pic and he asked "Why are they catching gigantic goldfish?" Pretty, hey?
