QUESTION: SHOULD I CHANGE MY TUNE ON CLEANING EGGS! AND TURNING even shipped eggs? Now I second guess myself and all my notes and the decisions I have come to from all those notes!

NOTE dirty duck egg and NOTE DEAD EMbryo in it on candle bottom pic!!!

There is an interesting read in my hatching notes about relevance of turning and sticking embryo... feel free to read it. link in signature... all it did was confuse me more : (

So either this egg was too dirty or just didnt get turned right :( which could easily be the case since I was unexpectedly in the hospital during day 4-8.

see that black spot around 1 oclock, it wiggles and moves a tad inside but stuck to shell... that was embryo

That egg was pretty dirty but that would not have been the cause of a stuck embryo. More likely did not get turned at a critical time. Although I had one like that with my first hatch and I was turning regularly so I guess it is more related to them being shipped eggs. Also my dirtiest egg was the first to hatch this last time. Just my thoughts. Can' t wait to meet your little duckween as my son calls his ducks.

duckween LOL cute!

So Sally, Sunday will be day 7 and I'm a little apprehensive about Candleing the eggs. I know mama hens leave the nest etc. and eggs cool a bit. I'm just concerned my incubator will take too long to re-heat/re-humidify. I am assuming I just crack the lid and one at a time candle them. I have 14 eggs in. Paranoia setting in.... (ps - they are in hovabator w/fan & egg turner).

As long as your temp is stable it will return to where it was. Lift the lid and take the egg out. Hold flashlight to it and oh and ah over the life that is within. Then show it to the rest of the household or just keep the moment to yourself. It is an amazing sight to see. The very slight cooling that will occur will not harm and might even be beneficial.
