just to thank you all especially sally.
i present a recap of what i tried and the stats i got.
personally, i think the stats show that the strategies to help busted air sacs helped.
to me, it seems the great majority of the eggs just didn't fully develop and it had nothing to do with the air sac.
i had 45 eggs shipped from about 5 states away each. i live in cold new england. the eggs got to me in about 2-3 days.
15 eggs sat for a week on the cool cellar shelf and i turned them each day 3-5 times
these eggs hatched at the same rate as the other, fresher eggs
the other eggs sat for 24 hours before incubation
i placed them in the turner, but turned them by hand for about 5 days. then i turned on the automatic turner.
i stopped turning at day 16. i candled 3 times, including day 18, which was a mistake--too late in my process to be messing around. my bator tends to turn out chicks on day 20.
i hatched upright in cut-down styrofoam egg cartons.

busted air sacs total 9
clears/early quitters 14 3 busted

hatch:
number of eggs locked down 31 6 busted

quitters suspected at lockdown 2 (one started to weep)
not fully developed 10
fully developed, looked dry 2
fully developed, looked moist 3 2 busted
malpositioned, looked dry 1 1 busted
malpositioned, looked moist 3 1 busted
internal pip, looked moist 1
internal pip, looked dry 2
hatched successfully 7 2 busted 1 malpositioned
needed help 3 1 busted 1 malpositioned

I would love to see a photo shoot of those cuties!!

Wow! A lot has happened while I was moving. I'm still in the middle of the chaos of it all. Congrats on all the new hatches! I may be game for the Easter hatch as well.

you know your game!!!

:yesss:   you know your game!!!

We'll see... I set 62 eggs on Sunday and I may or may not be up to my arm pits in chicks! :D

I'm testing fertility in one rooster and length of holding eggs prior to incubating. I ended up just waiting until after the move to set them because things were so hectic. Some of the eggs are 16 days old but stored correctly. I dated all of the eggs so we'll see how it goes. If I only end up with half that number that hatch... You're on for Easter!
