I finally got my hatching eggs!!!!! 21 FCM eggs from my neighbors, 2 silkie eggs from my neighbors, and 2 FCM eggs from my own yard!!! ^.^

Morning of day 22....still no other pips or peeps. Is that pretty normal?

Hopefully I get a couple more or my little lone chick will be lonely. The one with the cracked shell still looks the same.

I think it may be time to investigate. First candle and check for internal pips. (While you do this mark the line of the air sac on the shell, so you know where it starts) If you don't see any pips/movement hold the eggs against your ear and tap it with your fingernail and listen for a response. If there's no response carefully make a hole in the fat end of the egg, just big enough so you can see in. Use a Q-tip to wet the membrane and check for movement. If there's a live chick in there you can put it back with the humidity high and have a look at Sally's assisted hatch article so you know what's going on in that egg now and what to look for. And how to help if needed:

Good luck!

Ok, I managed to fit 20 eggs in the bator... There are 5 left. What should I do with them? If I put them in my chickens' nest (the hens have established 1 universal nest for all of the eggs to go in) would they incubate them? I have one full grown FCM hen, and one mallard duck hen, a rooster, and a 4 1/2 month old silkie pullet.... Would it be safe to put the eggs in their nest and see if they incubate them??

If they are not broody they probably won't. Sorry! You can mark the eggs and leave them in the nest for a few days and see what happens. Sometimes, but only sometimes, a hen will get tempted by a few eggs in the nest and go broody, I've seen this happen. But it depends on the individual hen and the odds are low.

Ah ok. I know my silkie would do it, her parents got a 100% hatch rate on their first try with 6 eggs, but she's only 4 1/2 months old and I don't want her to hurt herself trying to do that. My FCM probably won't show much enthusiasm for hatching.... My mallard might? She is a wild duck, it would be in her nature... I could give it a try, I guess? As long as its safe for my birds?

Oh my gosh! I went outside and put 4 eggs in the nest, Aqua (the hen) and Cappa (the pullet) get up and inspect the nest, and boom! Just like that, Aqua climbs in the nest and sits down right on top of the eggs!!!!!
