A thought, is it possible to have uneven humidity in the incubator with forced air? All the eggs with problems were on the left side and the strongest incubated directly over a water well, right side.

During incubation we try to mimic the natural conditions in thte nest. Egg turning prevents adhesion of the embryo to the inner shell membrane. It stimulates the rate of development of the area vasculosa (the membrane which grows around the yolk and is rich in blood vessels). The area vasculosa is important for sub-embryonic fluid formation, as well as for yolk uptake later in incubation. It allows normal transfer of albumen proteins into the amniotic fluid, promoting optimum use of the albumen. It supports the growth of the chorio-allantois (the blood vessels right under the shell) to maximize oxygen absorption. Embryos in unturned eggs grow at a lower rate compared to embryos in eggs turned each hour over 90˚. It facilitates movements of the embryo into the normal hatching position and reduces the incidence of malpositions in unhatched embryos.​

I agree turning is important. So turn it roll it between your hands but return it to the upright position. It is still "turning" just not turning and leaving it in a different position. Thinking...thinking,..thinking... Maybe this for the first 4-5 days and then into the turner. Although I think I like hand turning better than a turner. I think my chicks come out stronger from hand turned eggs. I am vacuuming the house and kids are at school so I am doing lots of thinking and planning.

When I get shipped eggs I will run my humidity a tad higher when I have air cells like this. they seemed fine and then as they grew so did the oddness and that saddle shape has to effect movement in there... I wish I understood how they turn in the shell and their movements then I could get more a grasp on it.....

Interesting idea to run a touch higher humidity. With all the saddling, the its a bit of a crapshoot and the aircell seems so large.

I gave no ideas on chick movement, I am still blown away that the chick fits in the egg. Maybe I can ponder it this weekend

I prefer 80% for lockdown. You cant drown them if they were dry hatched and the higher humidity protects them from me if I have to intervene.

When I hatched in the Philippines, ambient humidity was 84%. It made it easy to open the bator.

I have been dry hatching this whole time and it will be day 21 this evening 10chicks 20 to go in one incubator and 23 with no action in the other. :/ So if the humidity is higher during lockdown they won't drown as long as you've been dry hatching the first 18?

absolutely. water does not travel into eggs - it comes out.

The humidity inside a sealed egg is 100%. Water and gasses travel from an area of higher concentration to lower concentration. Water and CO2 come out, O2 goes in. We control the rate of water loss through controlling himidity. At lockdown - you should be at max water loss.

Okay so as long as Aircell's look like they should at lockdown humidity can be higher even if you are dry hatching. This is helpful to learn I don't like to see them too sticky to get out of their shells especially after they have done all of the work to zip!

So, news...I'm not sure if it's good news or bad news...so it's just news.

The hatch at my daughter's school was not planned very well on the teacher's part. The timing is a bit bad. The hatch is scheduled to happen over spring break. I probably should have clued into this, but i'm so bad at dates. So, I'll be transporting the eggs home (in the bator of course) next friday and hatching them here. I'm going to set up a ustream web channel for the kids. The school is less than 5 minutes from my house, so I'm not *too* worried about transporting them in the middle of incubation. The incubator won't have time to cool off.
So good news: I get to watch over the hatch
Bad news: the kids don't

Wow. Not sure why but that chick and her neighbor were both shrink wrapped. The second chick had pipped earlier but I thought it was just taking its time zipping. I am glad I helped them. No blood whatsoever and two very tired stuck-in-place chicks. I hope the rest don't do that. The two other chicks hatched just fine and I have at least three more pips.

his future is most unfortunate, I am torn.

Hobbles = DONT WORK.... the past 2 hrs we have put hobbles on him, he cant even stand up just falls over. he is stressed I am stressed DH is stressed kids are stressed from us yelling at them for messing around while we are trying to work on him!

SOOOOOOO I did the foot again and will let him go with the weird surfing position, it at least works for him! Now he wont shut up, I held him on a warm rice pack to no avail.
so back to square one....

He WILL make it, I can tell but he will cause me much more grief too. If this was one of the other chicks downstairs it wouldnt be so lucky thats for sure!! We just hatched a bunch of chicks and I am getting no joy from it either. I gotta go take pics

3D that is green grogel its powder that puffs up filled with vitamins and proteins. I got it from jeffers livestock online its cheap. I will get some more too! its nice for chicks first days!

I have two that were stuck and have crud dried all over them this am.....

we have two Ameracauna drying in the bator, a silkie and a cochin just went into lockdown with them.

in the brooder with me is grrrrr Bubba (who seems to stand a little bit closer legged this am, but I slept with him at the head of the couch and set my alarm every hour to check on him.... I figured out that when he is on his side he is sleeping!!! why? because of that stupid leg and he wont bend it right so he can lay front down like most chicks!! so he sleeps on his side like me! sooooo I will let him stick around for a while and see what happens, I am PRAYING that he starts to be able to wiggle himself upright after napping and I can get a break!


oh and there are 2 cochin in the NEW brooder box and I think 5 ameracauna? I need to count but I have new kiddo today so they will have to wait for me until later!

BAD bator experience with the amercauna!! 4 Malpositioned!! 4! out of the 10-11 in lockdown, one pipped wrong end and I assisted she is drying in the bator. the other three never pipped. I took my own advice too late AGAIN! but it wasnt just one or two it was 4 that were straggling so I just figured they were in a cooler spot in the bator!

I need to read again why so many were like this.... I would bet its from the not turning the first few days! but I will go check now.

I have my eggs in rows. A row in front closer to the heat, and a row behind them, I switch it up and rearrange the eggs every time I turn them, and it is working MUCH better than last incubation. I love your Bubba, but I feel sorry for you that you need to get up every hour in the night. I could never do that without being the most nastiest and vicious person the next day. lol I need my beauty rest!

I just put my sebastopol goose egg in lock down. It should hatch this Saturday, but it doesn't look ready. There seems to be a lot of space left in the egg including one clear spot. I even had to go back and double check the shipping date to see if I was a week off. I'm so nervous. I really want this gosling to hatch. At least it's still very active so I know it's alive.

Sally, sorry about your depression. I was fighting that all last year. Hopefully things will improve for you as spring comes in.

You are truley a big help on these threads and BYC wouldn't be the same without you. Think about all of the chicks you have saved based on your advice and all of the friends you have made on this site.
