The chick I opened the air sack on now has its beak through the membrane and seems to be breathing good on its own. How long can it stay like this before it comes out or I need to assist. I'm on day 23 today.

Ok, still no internal pip in the goose egg and he has majorly slowed down.  A lot less active.  I talked to Cletic Oaks Farm and she didn't think there was much hope.

So has anyone created an artifical internal pip before? I will do anything for this egg and I really think that I'm going to lose it.

Whoa wait I know exactly what's going on! I had this happen to a duck egg before! I opened the air cell thinking that It had internally pipped and I was wrong, so I regularly wet the membrane and left it in the bator. I tried to make an artificial internal pip after a day or two and it started bleeding and didnt make it. So from what I know, do not internally pip it that will only ensure that the gosling doesn't make it. Is it past hatch date? I think you should just keep the membrane moist and hope the chick will do it on it's own..

I opened the air cell on a chick a couple incubations ago and it internally pipped, except the membrane stuck to the chick and shrink wrapped it. So I tried to assist that one and it started bleeding and didnt make it through the night. I say keep the membrane moist and let the chick do it on it's own for now. Good luck :fl

I want to do fermented feed with my layer crumbles, will that work? Or does it have to be pellets? And what kind of container do you feed them in?
I use plastic ice cream tubs with the handles, just make sure not to use them with smaller chicken as they can flip it ontop of themselves, as I learned!!

I use layer mash its cheapest and the purpose of fermenting is pre-breaking down the feed to proving more nutrients and probotics, so my common sense tells me to use mash, HOWEVER I have no clinical studies on this LMAO!!

Do u have a pic and did you open the rest of them? did you get its beak out or did it get its beak out? Have you candled the rest any other internal pips or chirps?
for that one go ahead and open the top of the air cell completely so you can use a qtip and antibotic ointment not with pain killer though... to keep it wet at this point...... as long as its breathing its fine.... you will just keep watching that membrane and when you dont see any prominent veiing go ahead and peal it from beak to sides and if you get blood put back in the bator and follow those assist steps inthe article..... I can tell everyone I now use oinment EVERYtIME you cant beat it and havent lost a single assist since I started it! but I do have quite a ton of assists undermy belt and a great sense of time and the waiting game!

I will also add that I have recently switched from using sterile water in an assist to using Q-tips or "Ear Buds", and adding antibacterial ointment to inner membranes, because you do NOT have to keep wetting them and you can see in the pic below that the ointment makes that membrane clear, and it is ANTIBIOTIC it wont have bacteria in it that water can!
DO NOT USE OINTMENT WITH PAIN KILLER!

See BELOW the clear look with the ointment? You can really see how they are progressing without opening the bator, also you can see the chick on the right has much more time to go than the chick on the left by easily viewing their veining.
NEVER remove this membrane until THOSE VEINS RECEDE and blood is absorbed!

cochins,
I think your plenty experienced to make the external pip and take the entire top off and I know you wont touch that inner membrane.

Look at the membrane before you wet it, alot of times you can see a brownish mark where they are trying to make their internal pip, thats where his beak will be.
If not you know the first place to look is the lowest dip in the air cell.

WATCH how much fluid is under that membrane if there is alot DONT open the membrane yet!
and note EVERY SINGLE vein, ducks bleed out I assume goose will x4! DO NOT HIT ONE!

If you open and get at least one side of his beak cleared put the ointment on him and just put him back so he can acclimate his lungs, from that point on you will know if he can survive the move from embryo to "chick" and I would say he will sit like this for over a day, you may have to put more ointment on every 8 hrs along the edges.
