I would like to thank who ever started this thread I have learned so much by just lurking as my wife says.I am on day 20 and when I woke up I have a little one poking a hole through so pumped this is my first hatch and I had a little problem getting my humidity up to 60% I had all my channels full of water on my 1588.I put a container in the corner with water and I have it up to 62% now with the hatch starting I think that will help me bring it up some more.I just got a question does the outside humidity/ snow storm we are having now does that help the humidity come up ??????

I do not know about the storm part, but another way to increase the humidity is to put a clean sponge in there or a face cloth. Good luck! What breeds are they?!

Sally, here are some pictures of her navel. Any recommendations? I was thinking about taking another piece of string and trying to tie off the back object. The black part isn't hard because I keep putting on antibiotics, but I'm worried that she'll get an infection if I stop using the ointment since her navel is still open.


Here's one from right after I cut her out of the shell.



Here it is 2 days later. The navel is still open.







Also, here's my baby all cute and fluffy.

Guys, I still don't have any external pips. It's nearing the end of day 20. Tomorrow hatch day starts at 7 in the morning, and I reallllly hope I have at least one peeper by morning.

OMG, Sally, I just read your other thread. I'm sorry to hear about this

I had respiratory problems with a few chicks last year/year before. They were sneezing and breathing funny, made the strangest noises. I got some antibiotics (can't remember the name now). It was a powder I added a teeny amount to their water and within days they were fine. Never had another problem with it and the chicks grew up healthy and happy. The problem is I don't know exactly what mine had and what yours have, so I can't tell you anything else. But I see Dawg gave you some advice and info. He knows his stuff.
Keep the sick guys quarantined and treat them and see if you can get a vet to look at them, so you know exactly what you are dealing with. If I go back to SA sometime I'll see if I can get some of that stuff I used and post it to you, so you have it on hand. Good luck!

Thanks sumi, I know Dawg knows his ****, sometimes we all get pretty technically, I wont jump to any conclusions yet! The initial response scared the **** out of me to be honest so READ ON READ ON READ ON READ ON.... funny I was supposed to go get certified poultry tech today at harrisburg and was up all night in the hospital with my aunt and couldnt go since I didnt get any sleep since last night at 8. Why does stupid stuff happen at the most inoportune times! Luckly Chad will help me figure it out and he is licenced!

I'm so sorry Sally. I couldn't cull my flock, it'd be desvistating... Hopefully it won't come to that. Like Oz said, you have saved the lives of many chicks that others would have culled.

Sorry about all the questions, but another one came up. I'll post it in the disease thread if you guys don't know the answer. I was out with my chicks and watched one take a big crap when I saw blood! Right away coccidiosis came to my mind. The chicks were started on medicated feed, but when I reiceved the ducklings 3 weeks ago, I switched everyone to non-medicated feed. I started raising the chicks with the ducklings 1 week ago and yes, conditions were wet. The ducklings get water everywhere but I was made sure that there was dry areas.

Wet ground + non-medicated feed + bloody poop = coccidiosis?

I tried researching, and I still am, but I'm lost. None have died, they look healthy and they are eating and drinking well. The only symptom is the bloody poop. Also, I'm not so sure about cures. Has anyone delt with this before? If I switched back to medicated feed today, could that help cure them? Or won't it make a difference now that they have it.

yes that sure sounds like coccidiosis, I think Marty can help you with that, start a link and then PM her and let her know where your thread is, I am sure she can help.
